My toyota dealer said I shouldn't keep my K&N air filter because it can cause the MAF to malfunction from the oil on the filter and then the replacement MAF would not be covered under warranty.

I brought up how the TRD filter is almost the EXACT same as the K&N and he said it probably uses a different type of oil or something because they've never had a problem with the TRD filters, but with K&N they have.

Anyone know about this? Or do you think they're just B.S.-ing to promote TRD products?

That's what I thought. I haven't done anything to it, just installed it with the factory oil..

Besides, I didn't think they could not honor the warranty because of your air filter. I don't see how it would be any different than a TRD, fram, or any other brand air filter.. confused

According to the dealer, if the MAF gets coated with oil, it has to be replaced..

So it can just be cleaned off?

There are some MAF sensors that have problems with the oil on the K&N filter. But the celica MAF sensor (DENSO i believe) shouldn't have any problems with it. The VW MAF sensors does have problems with it, but K&N warns people for this problem on their website.

Yhe biggest reason for the oil problem is due to people putting too much on the filter when they clean it. Supposedly if you clean it properly there will be no problems. As for cleaning the MAF, does it really work ifo the long term. Cleaning an AFM ( the older air meter used through the 80s and such) caused it to degrade. Basically you get to clean it once then it is dead. Anyone cleaned theres a lot with no problems?
