Do you let your car cool off after driving it for a while. especialy in the cold. acuse i know with my quads. i dont get a chance to ride them often so after riding them i turn the gas to off and just let it get the gas out of the lines so it doesnt freeze or anything. but yet i really dont know anything about cars nor quads. just know how to ride.

You don't really need to unless you have a turbo or something where your oil and or water will get really got. In stock format, you shouldn't run into any problems by shutting the car off w/o letting it idle for a bit.

no you don't have to... and with quads, you don't really have to do that either, but shutting off the fuel is good only turbo's need to cool off after running...usually 2 minutes after

I read that if you don't do that regularly, it fucks your turbo and performance up, but I am not 100% sure, I just know you need to have them cool down first...which is why they made turbo timers

He would turn off the engine and pull his keys out, but intercooler was still running, he said it had to do with the turbo.

Like it was said before it all depends on how you drive. I myself being a very aggressive driver have totaled 3 cars in the first year or two of driving, some of my friends the same with nicer cars. Two of my friends, that drove back then would be close to SUV's now, got into accidents, not from aggressive driving, but from inexperience. That doesn't include the people I know that racked up points on their license from owning a fast car and very immature. Personally, I would never give my kid, whether it was his/her money or my own, a nice quick car like the Celica for the first year or two of driving. That's just me. Anyway to get back a little here in this post. I sometimes after real hard driving let the engine idle for a couple of minutes or turn it off and let the fan cool things down until it shuts off. I know it's more for turbos just gives me piece of mind sometimes.

I know it's more for turbos just gives me piece of mind sometimes. umm...if you are goin to turn the engine off...u'd better to just pull ur key...it's the same thing... the thing to cool the engine off after hard driving is to let engine idle for a while, while the oil, cams transmission slow down its working pace and return back to normal tempurature. turning off the engine and letting the fan cooling off the engine will not get you anywhere. and for the answer, yes i let my car idle for 1-2 min b4 i shut it off after running it hard. EDIT: what i usually do is that i drive fast at highways, doing 160+ km/h and open throttle all the time...so when i get off high way, i slow down, and drive it softer than i normaly (which is like when warming up the car in the morning through slow driving-under 2000rpm) would.i do it this way to save gas (idleing eats up a lot of gas)

I'm sorry If I didn't make myself clear. I usually in hard driving circumstances let the car cool down with the engine on, (I don't care about saving gas) but if I wasn't driving that hard and I shut the car down and the engine fan is still going I let it go until it stops. Sometimes just waiting in line at the bank will get the fan going and won't stop for a minute or two at rest. You just explained the same situations I did. I was just making a point that I thought, according to this post, was the only one. I'm happy there is someone else out there that feels the same. Thank you. I'm not alone in this thought.

Negative, a turbo timer allows you to remove your key and exit your vehicle without having to manually sit in your car for a determined amount of time to let your water and oil cool down because of the added heat due to your turbo. Say you just get done dogging the hell out your turbo gts. You pull into a parking lot and shut your car off. If you had a turbo timer, it would keep the engine running but locks the steering colomn once you remove your key. yea a turbo timer cools down the turbo when you shut ur car off

according to toyota and its manual, it recommends you to cool down for a little if i remember. you have to warm up the car a little (30 secs will do) when start, and let it idle for about a minute when you done. this is wut i do. when i drive fast on the freeway, i just drive the speed limit on the streets and then decrease my speed on my home street, park (which takes about 1 minute), wait for another 20 secs and turn off. its not really good to shut off the car when its warn and functioning completely. its like dropping an ice on a boiling water when its on fire. you just dont wanna stop the cycle when its functioning it hard. something like running on the treadmill, you run slow then fast, and then slow again and then stop. thats my opinion. i do the same with braking. i use brake hard usually, and then cool it down.

^^well yea, if you are a hard driver and aggressive..then a slight cool down is recommended...
but most people drive normally, not pushing the car above normal limits, so everything is running the same...so it's ok for no cool down.

the reason why you let a turbo cool off before you turn the car off is because there is oil in the turbo, you want to let the oil to drain out as you idle, unlike if you just turned it right off the oil will stick to the turbo and leave deposits, shortening the life of the turbo.

May be at the summer time. But when it's really cold you should warm up for at list 4-5 min. P.S.Some people so stupid that when they warming up ther cars in the moning they press gas pedal down to the floor to warm up the engine faster...
