hey guys, i'm looking into getting a new muffler for my GTS, i don't wanna get a whole exhaust system...too pricey for a poor college kid frown. and all i really wanna do anyways is have a better sound. looking for something deep and fairly loud i had been looking at a couple different brands on ebay and some other sights, and wondered what you guys would recommend. thanks

if you can't afford a new exhaust system, then look for a used one at least. don't go w/ a rice muffler.

I agree, you get what you pay for. WHEN you get the money for a real exhaust, check out TRD and Tanabe Super Racing Medalion. They have great sound and some of the best power gains.

Because I can sympathize with your situation, I'm going to try and provide some useful advice. Personally myself I'm saving to get an exhaust system, probably Invidia...unfortunatly living in Canada means I'll be paying at least $800-1300 for a decent exhaust. Check out some of the mufflers from Vibrant, Tom's and AC Autotechnic. Those are the ones I've researched and if you are looking for a nice looking muffler with a good deep sound, any of those should fit the bill. Remember, getting an aftermarket muffler isn't totally copping out and you'll notice the manufactuers claim "X" to "X" number of horsepower from their mufflers. This is because you can still have piping done to make a complete exhaust and depending on where you go and the material of the piping it could be a viable alternative. Exhaust systems typically make greater gains because of the R&D and high price piping that uses mandrel bent or whatever tubing for more gain.

If you can pick up a cool muffler and are happy with the look and sound, go for it, there is nothing stopping you from getting a real exhaust down the road. Honestly, I don't even think it's worth getting a cat-back exhaust for the money I'll be paying and the couple extra horsepower but I'm going to do it anyway.

Make sure to check out some of Vibrant and AC's titanium and real carbon fiber mufflers...they look pimp! thumbsup

Hope any of this helps, if you have anymore questions let me know! smile thumbsup

yeah, i know, i really would like hte the exhaust, but right now i just have an automatic, and am not planning on doing a whole lot of work on the engine as i have discovered it's really not that fast at all. i'm hoping to trade it in once i hit 50 or 60k on a newer manual, and then the real mods will begin grin right now i'm just trying to have something that looks and sounds nice without dropping a mint. thanks a lot for the suggestions.

I'm thinking about changing my Bomz for a AC Autotechnic's muffler soon, because I love the many designs they offer especially the Carbon Fiber one.

I've had my Bomz Racing Evolution N1-Spec Muffler for two years and it still sounds nice. I love my Bomz and I have gotten nothing, but complements about how good it sounds.

Universal Mufflers sound very nice and do the same job as other expensive exhaust kits. If you by the right muffler you will not be let down, just don't by any no name mufflers.
"STR" also, sells a great universal muffler, but it's a little pricey too.

No! get a cheap glasspack! i got mine for 90$ thats installed and everything! Cheap, and loud, very nice sound. It is a more free flowing muffler. even though its not a muffler. U won't regret the glasspack!

just save for a real one...you're obviously going to pay for one once you trade the car in...then you would be paying for a new one plus the cheap one you get...
so why not save for something good to switch over?

get a TRD exhaust or Tanabe Super Racing Medallion.

i'd still just buy something real & used. (as mentioned above). at least then you'll get some resale..buy something cheap and you just might as well throw the money into the air.

Yup, maybe look on planetperformance.com, they have a bunch of cheap exhaust systems that would take you away from the ricer scene.

But if you want a nice lookin' muffler, listen to stephen.

yeah, that is a point, getting a TRD now, i could probably always transfer it to my new celi, but how much work is it putting on a new exhaust? anyone happen to know of anyone trying to get rid of a TRD for a GTS? smile getting a used one would be much nicer than paying full price

p.s. if i got the action package on either this car, or my next one, don't i have to get an ext. version of the TRD? just an afterthought.

the install is pretty straitfoward and simple...its just bolt-on after all.

and you could get the nonextended version (it'll work) but it'll look a lot better and be more functional if you get the extended.

I don't agree, custom exhaust can be as good as a catback kit. Example you can buy a Tanabe muffer without the pipe, have a good shop pipe and weld for you and you just saved about $100 (give or take).

My brother has a custom Apexi N1 on his eclipse and it looks and sounds awesome!

I bought a bomz muffler off ebay and i'm gonna get custom piping from the cat-back. just waiting for it to get here. can't wait to hear it. Call it ricey if you want, but I'm still proud of my celica. I probably saved $400 b/c my bomz muffler was only $60 shipped...and yes it is an actual bomz, not a fake. Piping probably won't cost anything but $50 here in Mississippi...
