Transmission Fluids - What Toyota Recommends

Manual Transaxle:
Fluid capacity (drain and refill),
1ZZ-FE engine: 1.9L (2.0qt, 1.7imp qt)
2ZZ-GE engine: 2.3L (2.4qt, 2.0imp qt)

Oil Type: Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5
Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75W-90

Automatic Transaxle: Fluid capacity (drain and refill),
1ZZ-FE engine: Up to 2.1L (2.2qt, 1.8imp qt)
2ZZ-GE engine: Up to 4.0L (4.2qt, 3.5imp qt)

Automatic Transmission fluid 'Type T-IV'
Change Automatic Transmission fluid only as necessary

Generally, it is necessary to change automatic transmission fluid only if your vehicle is driven under one of the Special Operating Conditions listed in your “Scheduled Maintenance Guide” or “Owner’s Manual Supplement”.

When changing the Automatic Transmission fluid, use only Toyota Genuine AFT Type T-IV (ATF JWS3309 or NWS6500) to aid in assuring optimum transaxle performance.

Notice: Using Automatic Transmission fluid other than Toyota Genuine AFT Type T-IV may cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ultimately damage the automatic transmission of your vehicle.

What do they mean by "Change Automatic Transmission fluid only as necessary"? Does this mean it does not need to be changed based on age or KM's travelled? Only when it drops to a low level?

burnt smell, black color, weak viscosity... all of these are tell-tale events that the trans fluid should be changed happywink

Ok so I think i should change my trans fluid because my Celica shifts ruff and the fluid looks and smells pretty odd. But I have an automatic 2001 GT-S and I havent found any instructions on where the drain plug and fill plug are. And how much i should use. Anybody care to share some knowledge smile thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, I could have sworn one was already posted. I guess not smile

I just added a guide with directions for checking/replacing the automatic transmission fluid, along with adjusting the shift lever position at https://www.celicahobby.com/forums/...-automatic-transaxle-how-to-replace.html

I've also edited the OP to read the fluid levels more clearly, and to add the additional links.

Thanks for the post Isaac, I was looking everywhere for the Specs of the Celica GT. Now I know I could use the Redline MT-90 on my Celica smile

Hey guys. So I live in a climate with pretty cold winters. Would 75W-90 still be a recommended transmission oil? Or should I drop to a 75W-80 viscosity in consideration of the harsh climate changes? Any info would be helpful.
