Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior JL 15" sub

OK here's another prob i have...i have 2 jl 15's in my car and they sounded great but after a week one of the subs just stopped working. I took out the sub and tested it but everything seems fine except that it seems like theres no power. I took out the other working sub and did the same...it worked but for some reason the other wont make a sound. Did i blow it?? I pushed both of the cones and it went down smooth like it should. Checked all the wires and everything looks da same. Another thing is both sub are 300 watts for both so 150 each. Im usin a 1200 watts amp...too much rite???

First try hooking up the sub that does not work to the wires that ran the sub that does work. If the sub still does not work, it sound like the either a voice coil lead has broken or a K wire has come loose. Check number two: hook wires onto a nine volt battery and put those wires to the terminals. if the sub does not move then you have big problems. If it doe smove than that means the sub is ok. If it didn't move look under the cone were the connectors are. You will see wires going from the connectors to the cone. Make sure all of these are connected at both ends and are not cut. The voice coil wires are harder to check and only should be done by a shop. So if if the nine volt battery did not work and the k wires look ok then you should take it back to the shop you bought it...

Check the fuses under the hood and on the amp. This is the number one problem people have. You can blow tons of fuses. or you can get a circuit breaker. check that first

Sounds like you just blew a fuse, happened to me before, one sub works and one doesn't. Just blew the fuse in my...I believe under my hood...I can't remember anymore, it was in my old car

OK guys... If you blow a fuse neither sub would work...mmmmkkkk

Hahaha yea...i kno i didnt blow a fuse because one still works. I tried everything to hooking up and givin some power to the broken one and nothing. All i can say is everything looks da same as when i first bought it but jus doesnt work

lol you blew the sub, one easy wat to tell is to smell the coil its the thing just above the magnet, if it smells anything but like rubber then its burned. if it gives youa lot of resistance when you push down on the sub that is an indication too.

No Smell and it goes down smoothly when push it down...

It is probably a broken voice coil lead wire... To get to them you have to remove the dust cap so, I do not think you will want to check it out... Take it back to were you got it and see what they can do for you. JL has a service plan to were they will repair their own speakers so you may try that. The company I used to work for made their 10 and 12 inch speakers so I know a lot about them...

did you bridge the wires? also about the amp thing 1200watts whats the type whats the rms? subs 150 each is that rms or max? did you get the subs at a store?

Its an Audiobahn 1200 watts dont kno how much rms tho...but its the 1200D series. Bout the subs its the jl 12w0's. Dont think i can return it because i bought the subs off ebay a while bak. I used to have 2 12" subs by audiobahn and 2 15's in my old car but blew both 12's now i jus have one 15 left. I'm afraid i might blow the last one because my amp mite ois too powerful...

The cool thing about JL subs is that each one is bar coded so you can return them to any JL dealer. If the bar codes are not on the baskets you are screwed because, they will not take them back without the bar code... Look for a small white bar code that should be on the basket or body of the sub... Also just for future reference turn your amp way down because W0's cannot handle that much power...
