Ok i just a Tanabe from a friend of mine and recently got it intalled. For some reason whenever i shift gears especially 1-2 or 3-4 it makes a popping sound. It also does that when i let go of the gas pedal on 3rd. confused Anyone kno why it does that and how i can fix it??? Other than the popping sound its sounds great...

The poping is normal every once in awhile. My Tanabe does it sometimes. But only really when im driving hard. Give it acouple days to see if it does it less.

clean your maf sensor and reset the ecu. it would get less.
it will eventually come back but not as often.it has a lot to do with the outside temp.if you have a cold air intake that would increase the popping when you let off the gas as well.if you happen to ask why,i can explain later.

Ehh, it's front the rapid drop of RPM's. The rapid drop of rpm's are too fast for the fuel injected in the cylinders to be ignited. It is then pushed out of the exhaust valves and combusted there resulting in the pop.

Back pressure = popping.
Don't worry it's ok and plus it sounds good.

might i add that it has to do with ignition timing, the temp.the maf is seeing, and the temp of the cylinder head, header and exhaust.without going into too much details,
the maf sends temp redings to the ecu and it controls fuel ratio along with how much air passes it,if its cooler it will cause the ecu to mix richer, the throttle position sensor along with maf and other sensor readings helps the ecu determin ignition timing,if the timing is higher before tdc, more advance, more of this richer mixture will be burnt(spark starts sooner) and if it is less advanced less will be burnt.when you are in the tank the ecu is saying give me everything, timing and the injectors are going full tilt, when you let your foot off the gas timing drops back, and since its electrical and the pulsing of the injectors even though electrical is part mechanical, (cause its the fuel preasure that actually causes the gas to flow) the electrical part will always be more accurate in starting and stopping and the mechanical part is less "transient"in response,so it lingers or stops a split second later.thus there will be unburnt fuel due to lack of advanced spark! causing unburnt fuel to exit the cylinder head into the manifold,it is this unburnt fuel that is ignited,it could be in the ports in the head, the manifold or the exhaust.that is why cleaning the maf and reseting the ecu helps with the popping, the ecu is very "smart" in the celicas when it is reset it seems to go to maximum advance then work its way down based on sensor inputs.it is this period when the ecu is gathering data that the popping seem to be quelled.and i'm not just talking,i had/have the popping king of exhausts the kazuma and i noticed it by experimenting with reseting the ecu after varying amt of miles.the ecu is smart and you dont even make maximum power after reseting it,its after a certain amt of miles usually 50 to 150 miles(for my car dont know about others)some people say after 2 3 days but i checked the actual miles.if anything needs to be cleared up ask first before you flame.(i can go into details)this site is supposed to be a place where "we" can "all" learn more about our cars, not to act like idiots(aint we all!)...pun wink
