DETROIT -- Although the Big 3 are rediscovering that product is king and launching waves of new vehicles, Toyota won't be a stationary target.

By spring 2005, Toyota, Lexus and Scion will launch 11 new or redesigned products into the North American market. It is part of a product plan that will push Toyota's U.S. presence past 2 million units in 2005, if not this year. Toyota sold an estimated 1.85 million units in America in 2003.

While many of the products are redesigns of existing vehicles, Toyota is venturing into a new segment with the Scion tC entry-level performance coupe. It also is taking on the Honda Civic Si's long dominance of the sport compact market with the 180-horsepower Corolla XRS. Hybrid versions of the Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX 330 are also part of the count.

The six existing vehicles slated to be redesigned currently are not major contributors to the Toyota and Lexus lineups, but they have been in the past and could be more so in the future. Through November 2003, the six vehicles accounted for about 253,000 units sold. However, in 2001, those same vehicles accounted for 368,000 units.

The Toyota Avalon has routinely threatened the 100,000-unit mark, but through November had sold only 47,000 units. The Lexus IS 300 has been a sales disappointment, but Lexus executives have said the next-generation will have coupe and convertible variants in addition to the sedan, likely to sharply increase volume.

The Scion tC is expected to account for about 30,000 sales. The two SUV hybrids could add as much as 50,000 additional units.

Because of the launches, there will be dips in production output as the new models come on line. That is the main reason Toyota, Lexus and Scion will likely stay below a combined 2 million units this year, said Yuki Funo, CEO of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.

Said Funo: "Volume-wise, we will grow step-by-step."

The Corrola XRS is a 2zz-ge powered Corrola...

Nice! Talk about a Honda Civic stomper

:edit: Doh, not Accord, Civic

If they put it under the toyota badge as the altezza it would have no problem selling, the prize is jacked up under the lexas brand.

Why would they want to bite into Camry/Solara sales? The Camry is the most successful platform Toyota sells, and the IS300 would definately cut into that market segment.

i dunno, it kinda makes me happy and it kinda makes me sad.

happy: i know there will be a newly redesigned celica and it will be awesome.

sad: i thought if they discontinued the celica if i ever wanted to sell mine off it'd be more 'rare' and people would want it more.

I'm very happy to hear this, I really wanted a new celica, and was rather upset that I may not get a celica if they discontinued one. I cant wait to see the redesign.

smile smile smilenice to hear the celica lives on~

to add more...the new Lancer got 16x horses, the Mazda 3 also has 16x horses...this doesnt get the corolla XRS anywhere on being 1st place of performance in its class...and i think it only got 170 horses doesnt it?
Toyota should atleast put 4 disk brakes on the Corolla XRS (or did they already??)

I sorta hope there isnt A LOT of changes visually then the 7th gen. IMO, the 7th gen is great looking, and the performance is what needs upgraded. I dont really know if I care for the 'concept' gen-8 thats floating on the net..looks funny.

too bad that's only a CONCEPT...
it's going to look nothing like that
and I bet Toyota has great designers behind it.

Bah their not even in the same class IMO. The Altezza/IS300 is badass platform, inline six... rear wheel drive.. simply perfect.

I can't believe that the article calls the IS300 a "sales disapointment". I see as many of those floating around out there as I do BMW 325i's.

On one hand I hope the new Celica has a kickass engine (200+ HP), but on the other hand I'd be a little sad about having the "underpowered" model if it does.

it would have been more popular with the 2f2f crowd if they stayed true to the altezza platform; turbocharged I-4 RWD. could have competed against that goddam srt-4 wtf

Its great to have a new celica for 2005, but I guess the most important thing is: Will it be sold on the North American market???
