I can't believe how many "this is nothing like a Celica" or "this thing weighs more than my Celi!" posts there are here.
Obviously this is not meant to replace the Celi, or attract the same audience as our cars. Think about the market segment that buys Sunfires or (non-evo) Lancers. Toyota has finally decided to offer a PRACTICAL sporty car. I'm actually glad they are, because it's going to open up a whole new market segment for the company.
That being said, I'm as PISSED as everyone else here that the Celi's are going away in the US. With the release of the tC it's obvious to me that the Scion project isn't a poor attempt to create sports cars- it's Toyota deciding to exit the sports car market at this time.
On the BRIGHT side for those of us who like import sports cars- Mazda seems to be starting to come back as an actual contender. The RX-8 is (in my view) a good equal to our cars. The 3 blows away our Corolla's. The Miata is supposedly being worked on by Mazdaspeed for release of a model this year
. Still nothing like the Supra out there for us right now, but nobody can predict the future.
