A capacitor will smooth out the power delivery to your system. If your lights are dimming when your bass hits this will help.

In this use, a capacitor acts as a reservoir for charge. Kind of like a buffer between your stereo system and electrical system so that when your speakers would draw more current than your car can deliver, the current is drawn from the capacitor which is always being charged. They are very cool. Get a big one that looks like a can of soda.
Like said above, you don't really need one if your lights aren't dimming when your bass hits.
