my dad just took my car to the shop for a hissing noise i was hearing while accelerating. Well... they say it is the belt tensioner and that it will cost $400 to replace?? Is this the correct price, is there a cheaper way to fix it?? I need help within the hour!!!!

Thanks,

Scott

the belt tensioner doesn't hiss, it squeaks.

Describe more of the problem and we'll help you as best/fast as we can!

first at idle i hear tick tick tick tick tick tick, it really sounds like valves chattering, but when i'm driving like normally in town, when i accelerate i hear almost like a ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I can make it louder by pressing on the gas harder, like when no matter how hard ya press the gas your not going any faster. The two sounds i don't think are related but the ssssssshhhhhhh is what gets on my nerves and my dad dosen't like the valve chatter noise. but still is $400 too much for a belt tensioner?

do you have an aftermarket stereo?

a bad ground can cause a "pssssssh" sound under acceleration.

$400 for the belt tension sucks, it should be $0 under warranty.

no after market stero, i'm sitting at 49000 miles. Yeah $400 sounds a little steep, wondering if anyone else had theirs replaced and has their $$ amount.

Bad vacuum? Like, maybe the intake is loose, causing leaks that makes the "shhhhhhhhhh" sound. Then when you're idling, not enough air is going into the engine because of the leak so it's struggling to idle...?!?! Just a thought

its hard to tell from you just decribing it...but i had that ticking sound too and it increased when you hit the gas...i had a defective spark plug and it was misfiring...it scared the hell out of me but it was an easy fix thumbsup
