I just got a new (to me) 2000 toyota celica GTS automatic. i'm trying to figure out how to use the sportronic shifting (i obviously bought the car used and there was no owners manual included). i know how to get the car into the mode, but i don't know how to shift out of first. i have two buttons on my steering wheel, which both say "down" does this have anything to do with it? if one would say "up" and the other "down" it would make more sense. someone help please!

there is a button on the back of the steering wheel behind the "down" button that shifts into a higher gear.

you have to put the car into the M-mode
then use the back button behind the steering wheel to shift up and the one on the front to shift down..the car will automatically shift down for you but you have to shift up!

Hey I sort of have a questiona bout this. I have sportshift too, and I know how to use it, but I'm not sure I'm up shifting and down shifting at the right places. Up is fine, I usually do it around 3k, 6-7k when racing, but how about down shifting? I always seem to get some weird lag when it goes down. I don't think I need to take my foot off the gas or anything right? What's the recommended rpm to downshift?? confused

i think the reason why it is laging it because it automatically down shifts for you so even if you are down shifting i think it might be trying to do both..i dunno just my guess i know what you are talking about though..i never thought about why it does that!

Yeah, I wish I got a manual, but then I heard all about the problems people were having with syncros and misshifts and stuff, so I'm kinda glad I don't have to worry about that...

So that lag is normal? Hmm, weird... I think the celi's don't like low rpm's wink If anyone who has a manual reads this, let me know what a normal rpm for downshifting is please! smile

The problems are rather isolated, and its mainly with the 2000-2001 GTS before the factory update frown

it all depends on what speed your going or if your going to a complete stop. if im going to a stop i usually just pop it in neutral and just brake but if im going to a lower gear id say 1000 or 1500 works

You don't really need to downshift in M-mode. If you're stopping it will kick back into 1st just as you are coming to a rest. If you're down-shifting for corners and such, I always just downshift as I start to accelerate again. Shifting down to reduce speeds as you might in a stick isn't ever going to be smooth in an auto... no clutch and bigger gap between gears is the reason.

BTW, isn't anyone with the GTS auto bothered by the fact that the buttons for shifting are ONLY on the wheel? It's impossible to shift while taking a corner!

shift at 7600rpm when racing will take you to the redline (7800rpm) in ur 2003 auto GTS (i have the same car) 6000-7000 is too low considering you are racing.

shift at 2500rpm when normal driving.

i played the sportshift after i get the car and breaked it in...and it bored me. it's better to match the rpm using the accelerator in auto GTSs...lift the accelerator slightly, the car will shift to the next gear.
stepping the accelerator will give you 1-2 gears drop consider the rpm and speed (from 4th to 2nd..or if you are in 3rd, it will drop to 2nd.)

beware of that 1 gear in auto get you to around 70km/h redline(7800 rpm)
2nd gear at around 120-125km/h redline
3rd gear at around 195-200km/h redline
4th gear...i dont know, my car stops goin at 200km/h 4th grear 5500rpm..might be the engine couldnt go anymore or the speed in governed.

the sportshift will warn & stop you from dropping gear if ur speed is too high for the gear you are dropping. it will make beep sounds.

Thanks for the tips guys! thumbsup I'll def have to give it a try... I know the celi will automatically downshift, but I wasn't sure how good for the tranny it was.
