is 235/45/17 too big for celica ?will it fit ?

i don't know about that size but a buddy of mine ahd 235/40 on his 17 x 8 rims. tehn he went with 245/45/17 adn those are a little too wide hit his inner45 fender when he had to slam his brakes and hit a pothole at the same time.
