i use 4 gauge and you can buy that at any car audio installation along with the ends.remember if you have other people tinker around your car, dont get a color that would confuse them as to what they actually are"GROUND" some people might look at red wires in there (without tracing them to see the orinating point)and think thats its hot! which could cause problems!

Most grounding kits are over 100 dollars so I was looking to just buy the wires myself. Should save me a pretty penny, but I think the grounding ones that you can get from a hardware store are not made from the same type of metal as the ones from more popular and expensive grounding kits.

Has anyone ever installed a "homemade" grounding kit, and if I do decide to do it, should I expect minimal gains due to the fact that the wires may not be made of the same type of metal found in the more expensive kits?

Took this from a product description of a common grounding kit cause it's too late for me to be typing so much... grin

This auto wires system (ground wire kit) provides direct ground path from battery negative to body, chassis, and engine components to give extreme improvement on electrical circulation.
The Hyper Ground System wire cables have 10 times less impedance than factory ground system, which provides immaculate conduction to prevent electrical power loss. The higher resistances of factory grounds have negative effect to the ignition system and obstruct the primary potential.

Hyper Ground Wire Kits uses thick gauge 99.99% pure copper, and connects directly from the cylinder head and other points under the hood to the battery, to provide an ultra low resistance connection. This ground wire kit will increase the primary potential of regular cars to ignition-tuned vehicles.
Key feature of Hyper Ground System (ground wire kit):

Gain Torque and Horsepower
Increase Fuel Efficacy for Better Gas Mileage
Better Throttle Response.
Reduced Emissions.
Brighter Headlights.
Reduced Audio Noise.

Because they are probably made of the same kind of wires found at a hardware store but coated in different colors to appeal to people. If I buy the wires myself it would cost like $5. Plus, I don't feel like paying $5 dollars in shipping to someone who only pays $1 to ship them.
