Valvoline Presents the 2003 Civic Si Challenge: Skunk2 Si NA
Skunk2 pushed the envelope...off the cliff.

By Armaan D. Almeida
Photography: Wes Allison

If there were one car that embodied innovation, it would have had to be the Skunk2 SiR. The car flat out kicks ass. Poking our collective heads into the interior, we were given a swift Kung Fu chop to the solar plexus. The door panels and dash are composed of carbon fiber. As intimidating as it was functional, the AIM/MyChron data acquisition system sat efficiently in the middle of the suede tiller, giving the driver instantaneous feedback of all engine vitals quickly without having to interrupt his driving line. And with 10,000-RPM shifts, concentration is key. Not ones to rest on our laurels, we will provide our Super Street Online Newsletter subscribers (it's free) with a video clip of the Skunk2 SiR rip down the strip. The intoxicating sound of the all motor K-dub would send snails slithering into shelter. We could go on and on, but you'll have to keep your eyes peeled and look out for the March and April (yes, TWO) issues of Super Street when they hit newsstands.

A little FYI about this car and the story behind the track rules it 'stretched' to get those awesome numbers...

The problem wasn't that they interpreted the rules wrong they just bent the rules. such as they were required to have both airbags but it didn't say anything about where they had to be so the drivers one is under the dash on the pass side still hooked up. they had to have both seats so they mounted the lightest seat they could find on the pass side which was a carbon fiber go cart seat. the rules said they had to retain the wipers so they removed the rear one because wipers is plural such as 2 or more so they went with 2 fronts. they had to keep a working moon roof so they called a sunroof manufacture to find out the exact definition of a moon roof vs sunroof. the car comes with a sunroof so they went with what the rules said which was a moonroof which is a removable panel in the roof. they replaced the 125lb glass sunroof with a dzus fastened carbon fiber plate. also they had to retain the factory block and trans case so they built a 325 hp k series. they also put 6 speed gears in the factory 5 speed case. that is most of it but they got protested so much they had no chance. i think it was out of 100 points total and they lost like 60 to protests. Honda loved the car and said there was no rules broken but the other comp. thought so. also they were also the only NA car. its all about bending the rules PS the other engineer that works with Chris is the guy that Designed the suspension for the saleen S7 and the mosler car.

Yea, I agree with you, I don't like them much. This one is pretty kick ass though, I like the passenger seat, it's like a little dingy for the kids or something, haha!
