i would sugest cleaning once a year. each filter has a cleaning kit, the K&n filters have the recharger kit, Aem has one. most likey you can find them at any pep boys, auto zone or kragen.

...

They only need to be cleaned when they are dirty... i live in SoCalifornia - so I need to clean mine every 3 to 5 months... some people might live in Vancouver and those need to clean less often

its a good rule-of-thumb to clean something when it gets dirty...

the cleaning kits cost about $10 from your local Pepboys/Track Auto/Chief/Autozone and can be used for more than once thumbsup

just remember with the k&n filters, they work better when they are dirty. when they are really dirty, thats when you can clean them.

yes it does. some of the dirt on the oil actually helps filter out more dirt. but when there is too much it impeeds airflow. read it from my recharger kit thumbsup
