Well, after reading enough "auto sux" posts, I'm wondering if any or all the performance mods I'm making are worth it. Not to get into another auto vs. manual debate, I thought maybe the mods I'm making would at least make my car fun if not beating anyone in a race.

Here are the mods I've made/making: TSRM, AEM CAI, AEM pulley have all been made. Near future...Hotshot header, torque converter.

All for not? hmmmmmmmmmmmm. confused

IMO I think all for nothing, Manual is faster.

But I guess it would still be fun? confused

Don;t listen to that. Thats an amateur remark.

You ever wonder why TA's and Z28's come in autos? All about traction. Manuals can have a hard time with traction if they are puching a lot of power. A torque convertor would be a great mod for races fromt the line. The header (without the converotr) would be good for races from a roll. If you turbo the car or put some Nitrous on it, that would also be useful. There are many different routes to take in modding a car. It all depends on your setup and what you want. Catch my drift? You can do whatever you want, don't let a few internet remarks get you down.

Also, the shift pattern of an automatic is really limiting the performance!

In those cars you mentioned, power and torque are in abundance, so the shift pattern doesn't really matter in a 1/4 mile race.

In a celica however, the automatic pattern really isn't geared towards racing, it's geared towards fuel economy. In an automatic celica, GT or GTS, you will not beat much anything in the 1/4, unless it is also an auto.

Besides, automatics have horrible 0-60 times...gotta love those torque converters. rice

My last celica was an auto and I still liked it. The torque converter will help a lot. I would get that before the header personaly. But every mod you do still makes your car faster than it was. And with all the mods you mentioned you will beat a gt 5spd (maybe not off the line but you'll catch up pretty quick) an auto gt (duh) and any other auto gts. Do don't let any naysayers get you down.

I also wanted to mention that I think a jet chip would help, and before anyone trys to say that they are crap I will tell you that I have two ecu's for my car. One with a jet chip and one without. I have swapped several times and have also let a few friends drive my car with both and everyone agrees that it gives me noticible low end for my car. I will dyno it before too long to get exact numbers but also I hear for autos that it changes the shift points. Give them a call and ask.

Thanks for the support guys/gals(?). I'm having fun making my celi faster even if not fast enough in some ppls opinion.

I know I will need to drop my tranny to pull the converter to get machined at level10 (for $500). Question is does anyone know a ballpark that it costs to remove the trans, remove and reinstall the torque converter? cool

I just know that It's not real cheap but it does kinda depend on what area you live it. Call a few shops and let them know what they have to do and they can give you an estimate. Get several though, I have saved hundreds by not going to the first shop that quoted me a price.

Just talked to a couple of local trans shops and each quoted right at $400 to R&R the converter. But last guy recommended I consider a shift kit also to get "everything in tune together". Is this right and does anyone even make a shift kit for an '01 celi? Haven't heard of any.

Out of the ones you raced did either of them have a torque converter? Or all the other mods listed? I'm definetly not saying that an auto will beat a gt off the line but the torque converter will definetly make a difference. So I think you two need to race and then post the results.

shift points dont matter? so what happens when there is a short shift?

the f-body's auto are strong autos. An auto ls1 will hang right with a 6spd ls1 in the quarter. The ls1's put down 300+rwhp and usually run mid to low 13's at ~106mph.
