Sometimes when I want to overtake someone or just gain speed really quickly I Throw off my OD and this kicks the car into 3rd continuously untill I throw OD back on which allows it to shift into 4th..I dont do this all the time, but when I do do this which is normally to pull away really fast, does this do damage to my tranny..shit its the only thing we GT auto owners have close to proper downshifting... grin confused confused

As per pages 83 through 88 of the 2001 Toyota Celica Owner's Manual...

...

Be careful not to over-rev the engine. Watch the tachometer to keep engine rpm from going into the red zone. The approximate maximum allowable speed for each position is given below for your reference:

"2" ... 77mph
"L" ... 41mph

the "2" and "L" are used for strong engine breaking, as described previously (earlier in the chapter on page 84, "Engine Braking")

It is recommended that you not drive over 55mph while your over drive is turned to off.

back to topic...i dont think it's going to hurt anything...
it's just like shifting to 3rd gear from 4th...if you consider that as damaging...then it probably is...
but i do not worrying about that on my GTS auto...(we have OD button too plus the M mode)

On the auto GTS, the transmission is a tiptronic, I.E. when the tranny is in "D" you pull the shift lever towards the driver's side, and the tranny goes into "M" mode. You have manual control of gear selection via buttons on the steering wheel. Much safer than shifting with the OD button, because the trans will not downshift into a gear if the motor will over-rev. It also has a Gear indicator in the lower-left portion of the speedo, so you know what gear you are in.

Overdrive is your 4th gear, it's geared in such a way that 4th gear will spin over more than it's specified gear ratio (hence the term, overdrive) it's mostly there for fuel economy when cruising. When you press the OD button to turn it off, overdrive is disabled, and the trans automatically downshifts to third (because with OD turned off, your overdrive gear, 4th, is disabled.) However, doing this can possibly overrev the motor, like, if your revving past 4.5K on the tach, it's not a good idea to do this, since when you downshift to 3rd, your gonna hit the redline. read your manual for specifics as to what gear to what RPM should be used.

There's a safer way to do this, and it doesn't involve using the OD button.

If your celica's tranny has it's OD turned on, and you are in 4th, simply mash the gas pedal to the floor, your transmission kickdown cable will do the rest, and automatically downshift the tranny into 3rd, so long as your engine revs aren't too high for it to safely do so.

My GF got a Celica from a cheesy used car dealer. Was running rough at idle and they suggested replacing motor mounts (I know its prolly the IAC - I found you guys researching that problem) anyway - they replace motor mounts and now tranny kickdown isn't working - any ideas?
