i am having some trouble with grinding gears...i dont know if its because i havent changed the trans fluid in forever (which i will do this weekend) or if it is because of something else..if anyone could offer advice on how to maintain your transmission/fix this problem without going to toyota it would be greatly appreciated

problems with shifting? sounds to me like your cyncros need to be replaced but in order to do that your transmission needs to be replaced...hopefully your warranty can cover it.

I have heard the 2000 GTS has a history of synchro problems. Can anyone confirm or is this just a problem in general and not moreso on the 2000?

for me it sometimes happen when I'm shifting @ high RPMs on first or second. It bugs me like crazy, when I'm racing and get a good launch but grinds the gears going into second.. it's pretty embarassing too! grin

if I shift into another gear say 3rd while holding the clutch, and then into reverse it never grinds. read this technique on an NSX site awhile ago. maybe it worked.

VBSURFER, your synchros may just be worn out. do you speed-shift a lot?

its just an occasional problem...if you are asking me if i make quick shifts at high rpms...not so much anymore i did for a lil while when i first got the car...as far as the warranty goes, i dont have one...i bought the car in 99...so if i were to need a synchro replacement how hard would it be to do myself (cuz im poor)...i have a engine hoist and have assembled a couple of car engines and transmissions before with my friends who are huge motorheads (basically what i am asking is can i order the parts myself and do it...or do i need high tech equipment)...ps i am going to replace the trans fluid tommorrow and then lube the trans itself and see if there are any improvements

speed-shifting is the official term for shifting super fast. doing that too much wears out your synchros faster. your synchros should wear out over time eventually, and you have had your car awhile.

yeah get a new tranny while you're at it.

no you don't need high tech equipment to put a new tranny in. if you've done other cars you can do the Celica.

Yeah, before you shift into "R" try to shift it into 1st or 2nd or whichever you want while holding down the clutch. It works for me~ thumbsup

Don't make any decisions until a few days after you have changed the transmission fluid.

After I changed my mine the transmission was noticeably quieter and shifting was smoother.

My advise is to use a quality synthetic gear oil like:

Mobil 1 75W 90
Redline 75W 90
Amsoil Extreme gear 75W 90
Royal Purple 75W 90

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/svg.aspx

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/Moto...e_75W-90LS.aspx [mobiloil.com]

http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mgeara.html

It may well be your syncro gears but in this case it won't hurt to try the easier and cheaper fix first.
