Okay, this might be long, but I went through some similar crap, so bear with me.
I had a 94 celica that in the end had to get totaled (stupid woman in her Subaru) Anyway, it was the world's biggest production of course, gotta love insurance companies. The technicalities came down to that if the damage was equal to or more than 75% of the value of the car it would be deemed totaled. I wouldn't even consider keeping it if they total it, because then you run into a mess of problems, even insuring it becomes nearly impossible. Some people like to buy the car back and fix it up I know, but the only hope of coming out ahead from buying it back would be to then part it out. Sad, I know
The damage to your axle will become a big problem. I got hit on the driver side front fender. Once damage like that is done it will never drive the same and the reliability of your car will go out the window. I wanted my car back no matter what, but even I had to admit I was doomed when we found out that the frame had broke.
I'm glad you came out okay, you're accident looked worse than mine in the pictures by far. It's still a year later for me and I still haven't been given medical release to even go back to work. I don't mean to sound like I'm whining, I'm saying this because I want you to know I understand it can be hard to get back behind the wheel. I do reccomend that you drive again as soon as you can, because the longer you wait the worse it will get. I love driving so I wasn't gonna let someone else's dumb mistake ruin it for me. Get back on the horse, get a new celica and you'll be suprised how much better you feel. Getting my 02 certainly made me smile
