I was reading that a lot of people experience valve clicking in their cars. I think I have this to an extent too in mine. I was wondering if there is a way to adjust the valve lash in celica's or if it's just something you have to live with until you get new valves or heads. since this is a common problem I'm guessing our cars don't have automatically adjusting valves.

there is a way.

you can start by measuring yours.

pop your valve cover off, and measure the clearance underneath the roller lifter not the spring loaded side. with the cam's pointing north. keep rotating the engine so you can check all cylinders.

the tolerances are listed on a sticker on your hood.

then report back to what they are, if they're in spec and still noisy you have nothing to worry about, as this valvetrain is rather noisy.

I believe I read that we have hydrolic valves, therefore we don't need adjustment. Just something I glanced over though, haven't looked into this. I believe I also read that if you do a bilstien (sp?) purge, that it'll clear the gunk out of'em. Dunno, but I do hate the sound of our diesel engines. grin

:WTF:

lift is controlled via oil pressure and so is vvt, valves are not controlled by anything except the cam rotation.

we have 2 types of a roller and a spring loaded lifter. It's impossible to measure the clearance if you measer the spring loaded lifter, therefore you must measure the roller. most techs make this mistake.

checking your valve clearance is cake. If you cant take your valve cover off and jack up your car you shouldn't be checking.

I know absolutely nothing about valves, just said what I thought I read (but now can't find). I've also read that valve adjustments are a pretty penny. But, if all you have to do is buy the correct shims from toyota, why does it cost so much?

Labor cost is more than the parts themselves typically. Dealers charge $120/hr on the average. If you have to change all of the lifters out, then it's over $200 in parts and then more than 3 to 4 hours in labor. This is an estimate. I have been quoted over $1000 myself by a dealer. Find a Celica club nearby and hopefully they will direct you to a local mechanic that will check all 16 and replace only the ones that needs work. Good luck.
