I'm confused here...

I'm pretty new to these forums & the gathering of other fellow Celica owners.

I've been to a lot of Cruise-Night car shows during the summer, and I really like some of the custom chop-shop jobs that are done on some of the cars like multiple television screens in the front, a pair in the trunk, along with other effects such as strobing headlights & tail-lights, as well as the neon underglow & interior neon lighting such as under the dash... etc.

Now reading around here, I seem to be getting mixed messages.

What exactly is the "ricey" look, and is it really such a bad thing? Does it make your car look cheap or ghetto, possibly retarded?

Examples what I'm guessing is "ricey":
> Getting a new spoiler using the stock body kit.
> Neon underglow (regardless of color).
> strobing tail & headlights.
> Large vinyl graphics for the side of the car (splash, tear, or otherwise)
> Mixing & matching different body kits (sideskirts vs bumpers vs wing)
> Multiple television screens throughout the vehicle.

A lot of the examples I mentioned are definate head-turners for those on-the-street, and also gets attention when showing off the car at these cruise-night shows.

...is this a bad thing? Originally I thought it wasn't, until I've been reading a lot more on these forums where y'all say they are "ricey", and wondering how bad that really is.

I always thought the term "rice" were used by domestic car lovers as a nickname for imports. Seems everybody adapted it and use it loosely now. But I think most people use it to describe an ugly car in general. If you have done things right(despite having bodykits, neons, etc) and the car appeal to many people, then probably it won't get called rice.

changing the appearance of a stock import car is rice. and what risingcelica said is also true.

changing the appearance of a car (hopefully its an import because domestics shouldnt be labeled rice, it should be called crap...) is rice, but it differs on different levels.

for example, VSGTS car, its rice, but a well-done job. well-done job! now take another car for example, a civic that has two exhausts, metal spoiler, APC stickers, stickers of parts that the car doesnt have, left in primer is at the lowest level of rice.

this is my opinion. either way you see it, modding your car's appearance is rice. (flame me all you want but its true, you wouldnt call a stock car rice, would you?) (only hicks would call a stock bodied car, rice...) spineyes grin

If you ONLY value visual mods, it's rice. I wouldn't say domiestics are the only ones to call rice, we use that term here on almost every damned thread.

On a side note, does it seem like the topics in general discussion are gettin rather ricey these days?? All the topics have to do with visual mods.

If you get a wing for your car without a body-kit, I don't feel it to be rice if you are buying a body kit or are waiting for it to be painted or something. A car is not rice as long as it is an ongoing project. Take the TV's for example. If you put 5 tv's in the dash, then stop, that's rice. But if it's 1 step in your project, and you just happen to be at the point where you need to get them installed before proceeding, then do it. Also, unpainted body-kits, sure, throw 'em on and take a few laps around your neighborhood, partially for laughs, and partially to make sure they fit and won't fall off while driving. Also, it's understandable if you drive it to get it painted, like if you can't get it to fit in your trunk or something. Neons are arguable. I like them when they are glowing through the grill or use sodeskirts to almost bounce them back under the car. But on a stock bodied car, then you're trying to draw attention to yourself, then letting everyone down. They should be used to draw people to your awesome car, not set them up and let them down.

The wing is useless, cosmetics only. Spoilers don't do much until you get to speeds exceeding 60 mph.

"or maybe its just not the hip thing to do"

Thats it, like chrome euro tail lights are out of style, so its now rice. Hell the new celica action package comes with them stock. What used to be different and exicting is now the trend. Its gotten so bad that now OEM red out or smoked tails are the way to go just to break out of the heard of sheep. Thats just one example with one part, there are many mods that fit this story.

The bigger problem is import tuning has become so main stream that any thing short of the clean look is rice. You know I saw a Supra in a razor ad the other day, thats telling of the youth market today. All the kids want to be Paul Walker in a ugly import rippin up the streets.

Import cars will go the way of mini trucks if the keeps up.

Damn right. my car came with the same tails at the blue celi on there stock from dealer. they have grown on me. everoyne hates them becasue its too ricey. personally i don't give a fuck if people dont like it. is it ur car?... no!

The moral of this entire useless thread is, do what ever makes you happy. If you like the "cheesy F&F ricy stuff", like myself, then kick ass for you. if you don't, then kick ass for you too.

there have been countless threads on this and many other sites and there is no end. It is now cool to look stock. A few years ago it was cool to look tasteful ricy wink There is no point on debating this. There will always be people who do not like something you have or do. Its a fact of life and you(not necessarily you, but whoever) just need to be mature enough to understand that, and you will live life happy. Ok I have said my $.02, pease continue bickering.

i have seen a lot of different forums on the web dissing and flaming ricers.
i personally think that there is a difference between ricing and untastful ricing, ie. bad tast ricing would be ; a lot of vinyls including vinyls for parts you dont have, exessivly tall spoliers (spoil cars), exessive neons and tv screens( why bother with like 5 tvs ur not going to watch them, especially when theres like 2 in the boot. and exessive chrome just for the sake of chrome. there is style in ricing its just bad taste when yong and some old people go over board on the above things certain things. there is an art to ricing will you be the next jedi? lol

Could the argument be made that the hood wing is factory rice?

The square root of most rice cars is that there isnt a well thought theme for the car! If a body kit is put on, it dictates the style of wing to be used, vice~versa. Balance must be maintained.
I have no style, therefore I need to consult an exterior designer for accents. The Exterior Parts and Mods forum is an excellent place to pose such questions.
Speed is my greatest concern. Therefore if it induces drag or adds weight, I dont consider it for my car.
You need to ask yourself what do you want out of your car, then make decisions accordingly.

Rice is trying to be something you're not, like the GT-R badges on a Civic, or the EVO wing on a Lancer ES. This also applies to decals of parts that you don't have. But, if someone has decals for a part they've had, than what difference is there between those parts listed on the side of your car and the list in your profile? If the part is there, respect that they spend good money on a good part, instead of $10 on a decal. Another thing I don't like is the Supra taillight conversion on a 6th Gen. They put 'em on the Supra for a reason.

"Rice" as far as I know was first used by owners of american cars (stangs, camaro's, corvette's etc) as slang for import cars like honda's, toyota's, nissan, etc. And "ricers" where people riding those cars. And in those terms, it makes sense.

But it's become some idiotic label, that even ricers use on other ricers, to try and distinguish themselves. And to limit it to even a simple part on a car, just seems stupid.

RICE and RICERS is so old and worn out, it's as clever as hearing people quote wayne's world these days.

And that's cool...NOT! :-)

It would be better if people just called things like them see them. Like a big huge fuck-off wing on a stock car isn't RICE - it's UGLY and STUPID LOOKING. And altezza/lexus lights arn't RICE - they're TASTELESS PIECES OF SHIT.

My 2 cents.

I like it. Yeah, rice was originally a derogatory and almost racists term for the small engined imports, because, according to big V-8 guys, they "ran on rice".
