My car only had 26K MI on it and I had the same problem. I checked the filter under the valve assy. My filter was clean. I made a custom grounding kit for the engine. One ground to the Valve Assy, and the second to the other side of the engine where the chassis ground connects. I noticed that there was minor surface corrosion under the bolt head.

When I got it all back together, it hit lift hard and every time!

I hope your problem can be fixed as easily!

I got this pic from the Install section ENGINE "How To" clean your VVTI Fluid Control Valve Filter...
See where the wires are grounded to the bolts?? Under those bolts are where I found corrosion.
