so me and a couple of friends just installed a new intake (short ram) on my car the other day. And it looks and sounds great and all that good stuff. But my friend was listenin to it and said he thought that it sounded like my car was runnin rich. would an intake cause that to happen or did i just not notice it before? should i do something to correct this, or just be aware of the fact that i'm using more gas than i need to be? any help would be great guys

it sounds rich? do you have any other reasons to think so besides sound?

What does rich sound like,

(maybe a bunch of money jingleing around in there tongue)

you cant tell how rich the fuel mixture is from the sound except in extreme rich/lean setups.

Your friends retarded. thumbsdown You can't tell from the sound. An intake isn't going to make your run rich, it'll make your run lean because you're increasing the air/fuel ratio. But not enough to significantly affect emissions. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're running boost or you're overidding your ECU. wave

you cant tell if a car is running rich by listening unless is flooding and revving slow low down but lears up after rpm climbs.

you can however smell if you are running rich.

in the morning after starting you car ,stand behind the exhaust, there should be a slight hint of gas (smell) it would be really bad if you are running rich and when the car warms up during the day (if you stand behind the exhaust and it still smells the same way (slight hint of gas) then you are running a little rich.

extreme rich is when the exhaust looks slightly or dark black, car pops and backfires alot, black residue on the inside of exhaust, thick and wet(not necessarily dry and powdery). super rich when cars revs at high rpm plugs are fouled( black) exhaust is black, and falls emmediatly to ground in little balls after exiting muffler.

just a guide as to some of the signs of running rich.

peace

yea, i'd say you need to see some white smoke runnin out of your exhaust to tell if its rich, which makes no sense because like sancho said your increasing the a/f mix so it'd be lean, but anyway you might need to do some exhaust gas tests to see if your intake has changed anything
