I seem to remember reading a post about the following.

I installed my CAI saturday.
As I was just listening to my car idling, I have the feeling it makes some light 'rattling' sound coming from the engine, but can't exactly remember if it was like that before.
Can this be caused by installing the CAI or is the celi just a bit on the noisy side runing idle?

I do not get the CEL on, so everything is connected just fine.

Turn your car on, and get out and listen with your ear as close to your car as possible. The sound could either be coming from somthing loose on the top end of the intake like the sensors or what not or it could be the intake on the lower half rubbing against the frame or underbody plastics. If it is rubbing against the frame or underbody plastics, take your bumper off and reposition it so that it isn't rubbing against anything. If it does rub, it will rub a hole into your intake tube. It happened to me!

it could possibly be the fuse box you had to take off if you have an injen, or mabe you r not used to the noise the intake makes naturally sence you relocated it out of the bay, just to the right of your right ear. i know my intake sounds mean.

I finally found the topic I read something about this.
It is indeed more of a 'ticking' than a rattling.
At least I am sure it's not something rubbing, everything is tightened very well.
this is it

Is the 'ticking' sound really normal?
Grand-Touring Dan calls it 'It is what we call valve chatter'.
I think that describes the sound best indeed.

Alright. You first need to recognize where this noise is coming from. Is it a ticking, or a rattling? A rattle may mean that something is loose. But if you listen to where your fuel injectors/valve cover is...if its from there, its your valves. You can tell if it is normal or if they are bent/hitting something. They have some kind of additvie called TC-7 from Polyoron (spelled something like that). I put it in my car and it reduced this noise greatyl, I also switched to synthetic oil, and that helped a little also.
The celica does have a valve chatter noise. I have one and so do many other celi owners. It will also be a little bit louder if you drive the car hard. Hope that helps you.

If you have valve noise, get an oil additive that has a detergent in it.

if your valves are bent, your idle and ride will be rough. It will not be a smooth idle. If your idle and drivability if fine...you have nothing to worry about. On your next oil change, get one of these additives that me and Steven are talking about.

Car idles and drives perfect, like I said, maybe I'm just imagining things. I remember we have something here called something like 1-2-3-engine or something, which lubricates the engine better. I had it in my 6th gen celi and that made a difference indeed.

Thanks Dan!

No problem. Go ahead and add that stuff. It will probably just reduce the noise, I do not think it will get rid of it. And if it does...send some my way.

i installed my aem cai this past saturday, also. no 'rattling" noises that were new but the "normal" valve noise is still there.

yes, be sure that the noise is not anywhere the intake is.

I just listened, but the engine was cold, so always a bit more noise.
Gonna run it warm now and listen to it some more.
I think it's regular valve noise.

I understand from different posts the celi engine is pretty noisy.

Hi there

I made this small audio-clip of my car idling, right-click here [members.home.nl] .
Does this sound like the regular 'valve chatter' ?
Do your engines sound like this too?

There may be some noise caused by exhaust, CAI or just me moving around my mp3-player to record.

I have been having problems with my computer when it comes to downloading things that I have to right click. I don't know what the deal is, so I cannot listen to it. Sorry.

Send you an email smile
Oh, btw this was taken with my mp3-player lying on top of my engine, so it may sound a bit louder than expected. the ticking can be heard good tho.

hmmmm?!?!? that didn't sound good. really check the clearance of your intake and make sure it's not rubbing against your splash guards (is the opening large enough?). check all your bolts and hoses, too. i've listened to a lot of intakes and exhausts (the latter which i don't have yet) and that sounded abnormal.

I am 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the intake.
everything is tightened very secure.

This sound is what you hear very close to the valve cover, on the other side of the exhaust headers, so this sound is pretty amplified.

I think it has always made this sound and I am just starting to notice it (call it paranoia over my intake smile )
