My friend is looking for a new Hybrid in the Mid-20 grand range. She wants something she can throw camping gear and her surfboard in. Any suggestions?

The only hybrid SUV currently available is the Ford Escape. Mid 20s does sound about right for price. Lexus/Toyota hybrid SUVs are just about to hit the market. The Toyota one will be 30+, and the Lexus will be like 40+ though.

If she's not after an SUV, the Prius is about the only other choice, since its actually got quite a bit of room inside. Its also mid 20s, I think. The Escape uses a Prius-derived drivetrain, licensed from Toyota, if I'm not mistaken.

Otherwise, if she's OK with a non-hybrid, Subaru Outback or Forester will probably get the best mileage of small SUVs.

Prius would do the job. It is a hatchback like Celica and the front passenger seat can fold down much further than Celica. It can fit two 1x12x72" lamber easily. The front seat folds flat and 6+ foot surfboard will definately fit. There is also plenty of room for her camping gears. There can also be another passenger in the rear seat. For mid 20's she can get options such as Smart Entry system, Navigation system, blue tooth and other goodies. Can't go wrong with 55mpg as well.

It is the smoothest car I've ever driven because it is powered by Hybrid Synergy Drive. e-CVT is integrated into the hybrid drivetrain. The way HSD combine/connect gas engine and electric motors eliminate the need for a dedicated transmission hardware. There are no gears shifting in Prius. The only shifts in e-CVT occurs in the electron level. The way HSD "simulate" high thrust first gear is to generate electricity to drive high torque(295lbs-ft) electric motor. By continously controlling how much gas engine power is split into creating electricity produces CVT-like effect. Hence, the name electronically controlled continously variable transmission(e-CVT). Fundamentally different andt superior to conventional belt/cone CVT as in Honda Civic hybrid.
