So I just took out my butterfly valve, sounds great! If I were to put a K&N filter in, I know it still wouldn't be as deep as a Short ram. Why is that? Also, would no butterfly + a K&N still be as much of a gain as a short ram?

No, you gain 1-2hp, a short ram gets you around 5hp. Why not as loud, no metal pipe to resonate.

what he said i had both. ahve rmm sri now and it soudns so awsome. deff allot laouder then stock box-bfv. The difference is stock si all plastic, with many ridgeds, and has that whole box thing at the end The sri is jsut a metal pipe with a filter at the end. You really hear the engine wih it. ps sorry for bad typing i am at work and keyboard sucks

Taking it out the butterfly valve doesn't get you any HP at all. I think SCC did that on there project car and it showed no gains at all. But it just gives you that mean sound down that everybody loves. Adding in a K&N filter will give you like the others say a few extra HP, which is worth it.
The reason SRI is still louder is because it eliminates all the factory tubing and replaces it with a much larger metal piping, which resonates and sounds a lot louder, plus you get more HP gain out of it.
