Hey guys, I was just wondering what a HEMI is. Dodge advertises them on their trucks and they seem to provide a good deal of horsepower. What are they?

HEMI is the name of the engine itself, not a part.

HEMI stands for Hemispherical - as in the combustion chamber has a hemispherical shape to it. I don't know all the specs, but here's a good place to start:

It has the do with the valves and the flow of air/fuel/exhaust through the head.Basically, the "hemi" head is one of the best flowing designs out there. The closest design to a 'hemi' head would be a Chevy big block head also known as the porcupine head.

the top of the hemi piston is hemispherical (round). My dad and I are big muscle car fans, since we have a 1968 barracuda, not a hemi though...

here's a pic of the hemi cylinder...

Yeah, but isnt the current hemi a 'pussy' version of the older ones? I know the older ones had a lot more power then the current ones.

Hell man, just about any engine with a hemisperichal combustion chamber can be called a hemi (a lot of mopar guys would dispute this. however)

My old ford escort had a hemi in it; 1.9L CVH single cam 4 (CVH = Canted valve w/hemispherichal combustion chambers) Benifits of a hemi, efficient fuel consumption combined with good power and torque. also, the valves will flow better when open.

the hemispherical combustion chambers on the cylinder head act sort of like the shaped charges around the core of an old atomic bomb, they direct the force of the combustion towards the center of the piston, rather than across a flat surface. Also, on most HEMI motors, the spark plugs go in at an angle, rather than straight in from the top. When Mopar made the first HEMI's they created something unique, and since then, many engines have adopted a similar design for the combustion chambers.
