They're going to start putting nitrogen in car tires instead of air. It doesn't leak out because the molecules are bigger, and it itsn't effected by tempreature - so no more checking air pressure!

Isn't Nitrogen is different than Nitrous oxide? I'm not sure you can use NOS.

ya, I think you need special "dry" nitrogen for your tires, not sure if NOS or NX is "dry"

its just pure nitrogen - its harmless. No2 is something completly differnt.. it only costs $5 a tire to get nitrogen put in, and you could mix air with it if you got a leak or something - its just a substitue for air that isn't effeced by temp, and doesn't naturally leak like air will, do to the fact that nitrogen molecules are bigger then oxygen molecules.

What do you think about using H20 in your tires? Even larger molecules thumbsup

Air is mostly nitrogen anyway (78% by mass). It won't help much as most leaks are broken seals between tire and rim which will let even the biggest molecules out.

Exactly. I don't see it being anything more than a hassle. Besides, everything is affected by temperature, especially gases.
I'd rather have cement tires and rubber roads (no flat tires and no road buckles)...it's just as ridiculous, but certainly more advantageous.

^^ Nitrogen isn't a volitile gas. Nitrous Oxide is, and so is pure Oxygen, but a flaming wreck and Nitrogen gas isn't an explosive combination.

Sounds like just another way to make money. Imagine that, having to pay $5.00 to get Nitrogen put in each tire. What's the current price for getting just air? 50 cents for four tires if you go to a gas station, free if you pump your own.

race teams have used it for quite some time because of slightly less expansion when heated.. allowing for more stable traction... but for an everyday driver the benifit would be so minimal its not worth it.

I was joking about the NOS.

I think the most important factor is that it doesn't change with temp.

Believe me, it will leak. Air is already 78% nitrogen anyway, and THAT leaks.

^^ exactly this is nothing like no2 or nx whatever... it is simply in a sence purified air.. they just take out the oxygen, and other gasses that way the nitrogen is pure, the main benefit is the tires wont get as hot with friction, resulting in longer tread life...

This give me a stupid idea... what if we put helium in our tires? would that help in terms of weight reduction? I mean our tires take up a lot of air... it's like having the super-lightweight wheels grin grin grin

They use it in planes, and other commercial vehicles - its obviously worth it, although I can't say I care that much really...

Hmmm, maybe there is some benefit then. IMHO, I still don't think its worth $5.00 per tire every time it gets re-inflated though. To keep your pressure up, you'd have to have a tank sitting around at home (more $$$$), or go to a place that has it available, just to get topped off.

I heard from Discount Tire that filling with Nitrogen is actually cheaper and 73% Nitrogen is not 100% Nitrogen... does not necessarily mean they'll leak 28% less but I'm sure their will be a noticeable difference.
