OK, noob question, I'm comfused, I've seen turbos placed under a car in the back (on sppedTV) and yet I've seen hoods modified to let air in for the turbo, so where do turbos go exactly and about how big are they?

it uses exhaust flow to force more air into the intake..so picture a lot of pipes..most turbochargers are as big as a football...bigger or smaller depending on application.

they all don't connect to the manifold most do though.. like he said some can be connected closer to the back of the car anywhere on the exhaust, they also muffle exhaust sound so need for a muffler is lessened. they look like snails and suck in air on one end and exhaust gases power it on the other end. they also have things called downpipes(from turbo to rest of exhuast when mounted on the header) and uppipes(from turbo to intake) that naturally apsirated cars don't have.

still too loud, i'd bet. legal is 94db, kazuma is 118db.

I don't know about the Kazuma, but i Know you should use an exhaust designed for a turbo, it's more free flowing, little or no baffles at all. It lets the turbo spool up quicker.

for a turbo, you should get 3" piping all the way back. the turbo needs a free path for the spent gas. for an NA engine, however, you need some back pressure for... something. ~2.5" is best for NA.

NA engine? Also, is the 3" piping legal? And wont the larger the diameter piping make me loose low end power?

^^...u sure? what i been seeing/hearing, is turboing an NA engine w/ most aftermarket turbo is not very legal..and for our small engines, 3" exhaust is just plain crazy, which makes it even more illegal. most turbo kits for our cars come w/ 2.5" downpipes for daily driving. but i AM a california citizen...dunno if it's any different in other states.

everything care related is illegal in cali, unless the car is more than 30 years old. for a turbo, you want very little back pressure so that spent exhaust doesn't get sucked back through the turbo. it's not totally necessary, but it's a good idea. it may be that the downpipe is 2.5", that however may be for space reasons, not too sure. how does exhaust size dictate legality, and why would 3" be more illegal on a 4-banger than say a v-12?

we all know that turbo engines are not as emission friendly as n/a engines. most kits adds half the hp of our engines some of them toubles it, so you can imagine how much mpg turbo engines get..i agree, 3" exhaust is a great idea for race use or "special" occasions..less back pressure = more power..but for permanent daily driving?? it just helps the turbo do its job better: polluting the air. over here in cali, they stress that a lot..that's why some of us can't even get away w/ a modified intake/muffler, let alone a whole turbo kit w/ a 3" exhaust. and about the v-12...most should have 3 times the exhaust ports than that of an I-4, so it'll need as much space as possible for motor exhaustion.

i guess it all depends on the size of the turbo, too. with a small turbo, you could probably get away with using the stock or a 2.5" pipe, but the larger the turbo the larger the exhaust necessary, not just recommended. somebody with a turbo want to chime in about this?

What kind of turbocharger doesn't connect to exhaust manifold?

Size of the exhaust piping depends on your application and power goal.
For 2.0L 4 cylinder engine, 2.5" should be enough for ~300 hp at the crank.
Any higher than that 3" is recommended.
Smaller piping give better low end while larger will free top end power.

its not done a lot but some cars don't have nearly enough room to mount it in the bay some camaro kits get mounted where the cat will be

It's still "connected" to the exhaust manifold. wave
My question was
"What kind of turbocharger doesn't connect to exhaust manifold?"

Not really.
Turboing V6 and I4, you'll get more hp/dollar out of V6.
Especially if you are aiming high.
Z is also a RWD car and already have torquey V6 with 287hp to the crank,
it will go faster in 1/4 mile with the same amount of money you put in the car.

so does that mean that i can buy an aftermarket exhaust (like TPR) right now and get the small gains until spring when i get the turbo and still be able to use the aftermarket exhaust? i was told otherwise.

only if you stay at 2.5"...if you go with 3", custom time unless you can find one of the exhausts for 3" downpipes...but I haven't seen them for celicas
