My 2k GTS engine has crap sound (loud like "tar-tar-tar..." whenever I push the gas hard at <3000 rev. I also feel some performance degrade. Everything is fine >3000 rev and VVTL-i still kick in. Any idea whether it's a serious engine problem or the exhaust problem?

coolIf it only happens at high speeds it might mean that there is something loose under the hood(mechanical). Take it to someone who has experience working on Toyotas if all else fails

It shouts at any speed. Seems like it is tough to pick up until it hits 3k+ rev (can insufficient air supply by bad air filter caused the problem?). The noise is frequent ta-ta-ta and loud. Thanks for the suggestions smile

maybe your in too high of a gear. I know that if i'm going up a hill in 4th and should be in 2nd or something my engine makes that noise. Or ... you coud have an auto and this would be a totaly useless response

alot could blow you engine from my understanding i'm changin mine come monday! ummm the 2 bolts are ur lift bolt one is to ur intake and the other is ur exhuast and i get a ta ta tataat rattleing type vibrations werd noise after hittin over certain rpms and but also have been noticing power loss attime but people say you should look at them every 10-20k miles but i think you can go longer... the older model 7th gens are the only ones affected with this i guess cause of the bolts they used now they use different bolts longer or more tapper or maybe less of a taper not 100% sure but if you haven't changed they i couldn't hurt to do it now just in case you know

it might not be the answer to ur prob but least ur'll know thats not the prob and can cancel that out plus don't have to worry bout ruinnin ur engine from that!

the bolts are 43cents a piece and if you are doin what i'm doin( changin everything the TSB says to) then i will cost like 35$ not much at all considering it will cost you over 4k+$ to get new engine trust me i know been there done that no fun but it wasn't from the bolts but i know mine need changing !

good luck anything else let me know!

Just got my GTS back from the dealer (still under powerstrain warranty), they inspected the bolts and said they still in good condition. Surprisingly it's the leaking from the exhaust pipe (no more warranty frown ). So you know it may be a symptom of leaking exhaust spineyes
