In your profile, it says you have a CAI. Probably that means you have a K&N or similar filter. Hawaii isn't a very dusty place, so my guess is you won't have to clean your filter until its had 30K-50K miles on it. Do you know how many miles the car had on it when the CAI was put on?

300,000 KM/Sec. Its not just a good idea, its the law.

You should clean it at least once a year. I cleaned mine after a year (about 12000 miles) and it was dirty as hell and was not in good shape.
