Do you guys know what the heck Toyota did to the great GTS engine in the Matrix XRS and Corolla XRS that it only has 170hp and less torque?

Yeah, its "detuned". Most likely different settings in the ECU? Is it to get better mileage?

The reason for "de-tunning" the 2zz in the Corolla XRS was to broaden out the torque curve for better low and mid range response thus making it a better daily driver for the average consumer, i.e. they don't have to rev it up as high we do to make it go.

Me personally I'd rather have my high reving, high strung Celica any day of the week over a Corolla, but I guess de-badged it would make a good sleeper for it's class.

"produces 170 horsepower at 7,600 RPM and 127 lbs./ft. of torque at 4,400 RPM and delivers broader and stronger mid-range torque than the previous versions of the 2ZZ engine."

Check out the speedo, that should be pretty easy to peg even with a de-tuned 2zz, it must be governed or something.

You sure that's an XRS speedo and tach? Redline should be 7800...

Yeah that's a Corolla Sport speedo. I remember when I sat in the XRS in the showroom, there was a 9 on the RPM gauge, plus much higher redline.

I read on the Matrix forums that for 2005, Toyota up the lift engagment point on the Matrix XRS to 6500-6700 rpm! Toyota loves to screw people around I see, those guys can't even land lift 2-3rd now. Damn, if only we knew how they change it around so easily, I'd like to reprogram mine so its more like the Lotus.

I think they are also single point fuel injection, whereas the GTS is multipoint. confused

multi-point or multi-port?

XRS and GTS are both multi-point fuel injection (cars.com)
