Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Cutting fiberglass...?

Does anyone have any recommendations for tools/methods used in cutting fiberglass? I've got to fit my vertical doors underneath fiberglass fenders and I know enough that "rolling" the inner lining won't be a good idea.

Do I just take a knife to it? Scissors? Should I use gloves?

If you can help, or point out a link that can, I'd appreciate it.

Having worked with and laid a lot of fiberglass, the best way to work with it is to sand it. It'll take a while, and wear a mask!, but that's the only way to work with it without cracking it (plus it'll stay smooth without any extra work).

Get yourself a dremel tool with a sanding drum, turn it on high, and you can cook through a lot of 'glass rather quick.

If you're trying to actually cut a piece of fiberglass (so that you can use both pieces when you're done), get a dremel tool with a couple cutting wheels. Get yourself glasses or goggles because when those cutting wheels shatter, they fly all over and very fast (been stabbed in the forehead a few times).

my dad has a project kit car and we jsut use a small jugsaw and wear a mask But then again his body on it is really thick fiberglass and reinforced in some areas so a dremmel just wont cut it. Just take your time and all will be good

Sweet, thanks. I'm not actually looking to sand it down. I'll let the paint shop take care of that. I just want to cut out the inner lip so that the VDC arm can come out and go up.

I was thinking of using tin snips but I'd need the dremel to smooth it out after cutting it anyways... They're like $70 for a kit.

The snips will chip and crack the fenders. Either use a hand grinder or better yet get that dremel tool

yea thas a thin fiberglas so deff go get yourself a dremmel. you can get them for liek 40-50 ish. i use mine all the time for little prjects
