I need new tires rather urgently, my current ones look like they've got tons of tread left but I recently locked them way too easily in a panic situation. I've got a few questions.
My first one (I've searched and have not come up with an answer) is do I need to keep my tire size at 195/60 for stock steelies? What's the biggest width I can (safely) fit on those wheels? I don't have money for rims, this is a kinda urgent need for better tires, but I want to make it worth my time and money.
Second is the specific tire. I'm looking at Yokohama Avid H4S (or V4S, depending on the answer to the above question) as my first choice, and my second would be Kumho Ecsta HP4 716 (or Ecsta ASX, if I can find any nearby). I've looked at the reviews and they seem alright, but does anyone with a Celica have personal experience with these or other tires? Again, price is a concern, although new tires will be cheaper than an accident.
Finally, what is a fair price for mounting and balancing tires (not including the cost of the tire)? I'm looking at buying them online for cheaper and getting someone to install it seperately, if it all adds up cheaper.
Thanks in advance for you help.

what kind of tires are you looking for. I usually shop for sport/performance tires. how about yokohama AVS ES100? they're nice and grippy in dry and wet conditions. i don't think that tires will help you avoid locking up. the best way to brake without ABS is just pump the hell out of it. try www.tirerack.com [ tirerack.com]

oh and you can go wider and thinner if you want for tire size. try 205/55/15 or even 205/50/15

as kim mentioned, i suggest the yoko es100. great performance tire if you're on a budget. as for mounting and balancing, you're looking at paying at least $50 to 60, at the most

Falken Ziex tires are very good, you don't pay as much as yoko have awesome wet and dry stickyness. suck in snow like 90% of performance tires

Thanks for everyone's advice.
I'll look around for some ES100s then, it looks like I'll buy them online and get them on somewhere else.
My brakes locked with less pedal pressure than I've put on them before. Part of it had to do with a slightly different road surface (the cement stuff they use for freeways), but for how much I pushed them they had no business locking. I and my car are very lucky that there wasn't a car directly ahead (long story how everything played out).

will 225/50/15s fit on stock rims? Cause those Falken Ziex 512s come in that size.

I really doubt you can fit 225s on my wheels (I've got hubcaps w/steel rims). I'm not too sure about the 15" and 16" rims, but I wouldn't be too sure. If someone knows the answer to the first question of mine I'd love to hear it.
Here's how everything stacks up:
AVS ES100 UTQG: 280 AA A Price: $73/each
Avid H4S UTQG: 500 AA A Price: $53/each
UTQG only tells you so much about a tire. Will the ES100s be worth 80 extra bucks? They're both H-rated, the Avids I could take on light snow (if I'm ever up north), would last longer, and cost less.

well the AVS is more for sport. but if you want something cheap that'll work just go for the avids. and no you don't have to keep the stock size for the steelies. look at my second post.

Thanks Kim I missed that somehow. I just realized though that the H4S doesn't come 205/55, I'd have to get the Avid V4S, but they're the same price as the AVS. I'll just get 195/60 Avid H4S. Thanks everyone for your advice.
