Sup,
I'm running a GTS stock auto right now, and I'm curious if the tiptronic really does anything. I've been in a few "races" (ppl cut me off. I get pissed, cut them off. They try to do the same again, and off we go) but nothing too serious. I just wanna hear how tiptronic is better or worse than just flooring it on an automatic.

Oh yeah, and is it worth the gas save to shift at 2,200?

there's a thread about sport shifting i posted how to use it if you really wana race. The general benifit of the tranny, not in the celica specifically, is that if it's designed for sport use you can shift faster with a computer than you can with your hands. Like in the new ferrari's. As far as our celica's go it's only a 4 speed triptronic, so it's not that much of an advantage since it's built off the auto tranny. BUT it can be fun to play with and with some practice be useful in a race situation. But in the celicas case a manual is prefered for power because of the decreas in power loss from a parasitic tranny.

Automatics are only superior in Mercedes and Ferraris. All other cases, its better to have a manual. Shifting yourself is only good to have "control" over what the car is doing, but in a pure drag race, its best to just let the computer take over and shift for you, cause there is a chance you'll hit fuel cut and lose 1/2 sec from mis-shifts.

the tiptronic will alow you to gain 10km/h b4 you go into the next gear compare to flooring it. however, it will drop you to a slighty worse powerband in the GTS than flooring it. you do the math. about the gas saving question... it depends. if you are on an uphill, and you shift at 2200 from 3rd to 4th, the power will not be there for you. in other words, you will waste gas because you are injecting more gas and no power is given from the engine because you on in 4th. it all depends on experience.
