Was reading the book on the overdrive button and it says it starts on and to keep it on for fuel econ and all of that. Well i was just wondering in which cases WOULD you want to drive with it off?

First thing I do after I start the engine is turn off the O/D. I only use O/D when I reach 50 mph, in fact I drive O/D off in the city. And obviously I turn it off at the freeway to brake with the engine. -It's important to say that cruise control ON disables O/D off mode.

O/D off just means you forcing the gear box to stay in 1-2-3.
in other words, you disable the 4th gear.

yea overdrive is jsut another gear only real diffrence is the ratio
say 3rd gear is 4 turns of the enigne to 1 turn of the tire (these ratios are NOT coreect)
4th gear overdrive would be 1 turn of the engine to .7 turns of the tire (again not correct ratios)

its pretty much useless to turn it off

When i had an auto i would use it when i pass on the freeway. Basically use it to downshift to third. Otherwise Id leave it on cause its saves gas

If I want to pass, I just force a downshift with my foot. Sometimes I don't need to force a downshift 'cause I don't necessarily need to increase my speed so much.

I turn it off for downhill mountains, helps save the brakes a bit. I've never had my car smelling to overheated brakes before. thumbsup If the uphill is steep enough, I might turn it off as well, since there might not be enough power in 4th gear to maintain my speed.
