I have a 2000 GTS 6 speed manual from 04/00 (before the "factory update")

My question: I've gone through TWO shiftlinkage cables in about 2 months, first one I was in a parking lot, went to shift into reverse, pop the linkage broke and the car was stuck in 1st.

Second time, I was coming up to a stop sign in 4th, shifted out, pop, cable snapped im stuck in 4th.

The dealership cannot find ANYTHING wrong with the transmission or a reason why the cables are breaking. The general manager said its REALLY rare to see broken cables, especially TWICE.

Has anyone here had similar problems? I have a hard time getting the car into reverse, sometimes it takes like 3 or 4 tries to "push" the tranny into reverse.

Also, if I shift from 2nd to 1st without stopping COMPLETELY, the tranny makes a really loud grinding sound. I've noticed the shifting getting more stiff and feels "brittle"

I've changed the manual gear box oil and the car was NEVER driven hard on the new shift linkage cable.

Does anyone here have any ideas? I contacted the dealership with this problem, they fixed the broken linakge but couldn't figure out why it was breaking. Also, I've been to another dealership, and they gave me a bunch of grief about "didn't buy it here we aren't going to fix it"

Any info on how to contact Toyota to get someone higher up invovled would be greatly appreciated. I think it needs a new transmission, but, I could be wrong. If it does need a new tranny, how do I go about getting it repaired under warranty? car has 49K miles and a 100,000 extended warranty ($50 deductable wrap around)

this might not make sense but maybe double clutching will help this

edit:at what RPM (estimate) do you downshift from second to first?

I put the clutch in all the way, slow the car down to like 5-10MPH and 500 RPM and then go to shift into first and *GRIND*

No other cars I've driven do this...

Also, double clutching shouldn't be needed to drive the car, it's bone stock, so it should operate the way it was intended to.

Yup, that happened to a friend but he has a cavalier RS, at the beginnin he had problems to shift to reverse, it was hard as hell ( i remember the two of us tryin to shift to reverse, we had to shift to neutral and then push the car thumbsdown), then it was worse he couldnt shift to 5th, because he didnt fix it at the beginin, that f*ed up the other one. They told him that it was the cables, he had to pay $400 to get it fixed... too bad. I hope you get it fixed now before it gets worse. rice

it sounds like your tranny is messed up if it grinds...
