I know bhp is brake horsepower (or so I've read) but what is whp that everyone keeps using, and whats the difference?

BHP= The amount of power your engine is making, before going through the parasitic process of going to the wheels, when car specs come from the factory, it's always BHP.

WHP= The true amount of horses that actually get to the wheels, this is rated after the power has gone from the engine and through the transmission.

For example Celica GTS comes from the factory with 180 BHP, the amount of hp that actually goes to the wheels is around 166 WHP (not sure on the number just an example.)

Yeah automatic transmissions typically lose 20% thru drivetrain loss and manuals 15%. On the celica, (possibly cause of low torque??) the automatic appears to lose just over 20%.

whp is much more important than bhp.

just as simplified version of what was already explained by breakindrifts:

bhp = horsepower at the flywheel (nothing attached to it such as the transmission).

whp = horsepower you are left with after everything is attached in a real-world scenario. what your engine actually puts out in your cars actual setup.

for instance, if you have two factory rated cars that are rated at 200 bhp and 180 bhp respextively you would think that 20 horses is a pretty big difference and may sway your buying power. however, if you put them both on the same dyno and they both registerred 160 whp, then they are actually equal (by power standings anyway).

the example i used is typical of the celica gts and acura rsx-s. powerwise they are both the same with none holding more than a 3 whp advantage usually. what makes the difference is weight (celica wins), 'lift' or 'v-tec starting engagement (rsx-s wins), and redline (rsx-s wins).

Now that makes sense, I knew that even though my GT is rated at 140 bhp, that they don't put out that much. I thought it was just variations in engines, but now I know the real reason. man I love this site.
