annoying sound coming out of GTS

ive had this problem for awhile now but i tend to just avoid it since i dont have a ton of money to pay the dealership to look at it. when i bring the rpms up in gear to whatever number, lets say 4000 then i let off the gas and let the rpms fall, i hear what sounds like a slight grinding noise. its not really loud but it is noticable. any Info would be great. im very interested to find out what is causing this noise!

it could be a whole host of problems, but more than likely is something in the transmission. Any misshifts or freak transmission incidents lately?

COULD also be a messed up rim install causing some rubbing.

no mis-shifts or anything and lift still kicks in hard. Definitly not the wheel but i agree that was a possability. Could be coming from the tranny but i swear it sounds like its coming from engine. almost like cams grinding or something.

if your lift is still kicking in hard then it's almost certainly not the cams.

new or used GTS ??

i have a used 00gts with about 88k on the odometer. i havent checked the power steering fluid but guess i should. It only makes the sound when im decelerating from above about 3000rpms. if i took off in first and got the rpms up to 5 gs and just let off the gas while the rpms decreased. This is when i hear the noise.

i'd say check the power steering fluid, though if it ONLY makes it when you decelerate that's prolly not it. I'll keep thinking about it.

i have the same thing happening to mine, like when I cruise down the freeway at 60 or so and try to keep it steady...its a weird grinding noise like the clutch isnt completely disengaged or something...

im not sure if our problems are the same Haggard because mine doesnt make the sound when im just crusing at sixty but more like when ive brought the rpms up high in second or first gear the just let off the gas and watcht the rpms drop. not sure though we could have the same problem. I only heard the noise though when i 1)dont have the cluch down 2)foot is off the gas and rpms going down.

if it goes away when then clutch is down it's either the clutch or the flywheel I'd say

yea i was thinking theres a good chance its the transmission and plus i still the orginial shift gates the 00 came with. The sound continues as long as im decreasing in rpms and seems to only be noticable 1rst through 3rd gear. if i was to get the rpms up in 4th or 5th and let them decrease the sound is either not there or not noticable.

yea i have the same noise on my 00 gts its at like 2800-2900 rpms i don't think its the tranny clutch or flywheel if it was it wouldn't matter what rpm it would be at i think its jsut something vibrating like maybe the heat shield or something like that

well if they look at it let us know what it is

i'll be putting a stock exhaust back on shortly i'll see if that solves the proplem

let me be the first one to break the bad new to ya..Power train warranty DOES NOT cover clutch or flywheel replacement..it is consider as a "wear and tear" part..so don't count on the dealer replacing them..i tried that when my clutch burned out..they said "NO"...cost me $500 though..that's half price at the dealer since i only had the car for 2wks..word of advice, take ur car to a certified Tranmission shop..some will look at the problem free of charge..do that first to find out exactly wat is causing the sound and they can get you an esitmate on getting it fix..good luck..

yeah 5 year 100,000 mile.

Well the thing is it doesn't sound like it's shot yet, hell it may not even be that. Just what I think. Take it to the dealer first and then see what happens from there. If you have to pay some cash DON'T go to the dealer. thumbsup

dealer will charge for $75 no question ask for inspection..atleast the dealer here in my town..then i brought my car to a transmission shop and they check it out for free..so think about it..get it check for free first, if u're not satisfy with wat they think might be the problem, then go to the dealer..

regardless if it's 5yrs/100k powertrain warranty..it's only good for ur engine, if it's ur engine then they'll fix it..if it's ur clutch or flywheel, then you betta dig deep..

Same thing with my car, but my RPM's seem to be like around 4000ish when i let go of the gas. I know their is something wrong with my car though, it sucks tring to shift into 2nd when i redline first.

Good 'ol warrenty. I need to take it in soon.

mine follows engine rpm, sounds like a slight grinding, and stops when the rpms get too low to even hear it.

Same thing here, I didn't know if it was a problem or something common.

Yeah, i have a 00 gts w/only 30,000 on it. It's does the same thing too. I have exhaust and Intake, didn't change a thing. It's transmission i think. I've had the dealer check it twice and they didn't find anything bc it's sporadic.

ive got the same problem too..i read something before about the noise n it said its a common problem for the celicas, i cant remember what it said but i remember it saying something to do with the exhaust system like around the header area...it might even be a heat shield in the header area rattling when you take off the gas n just cruise

ok yesterday i installed my old exhaust(stock) while i work on my tanabe with the stock exhaust on it made no noise ! so for the people whos proplem sounds like mine theres an awsere lol cars not falling apart jsut somethin in the exhaust is resonatating at a specific rpm maybe bolts that weren tight enough or a flange that isnt' making a good seal what ever it is its not your car dying ! lol
