Idle question

ok so i just bought a 2000 gt about 4 days ago, my first issue was wiht the engine light it came on and i think it might be because i filled it up with regular, does it need premo, also when my car is idle it drops under 1000rpms in neutral and sometimes stulls. it stops doing that and idles out normally after i drive it for a while but still it pisses me off, does anyone have this problem or have any ideas, i thought maybe that fuel wasnt getting to the engine so i put some of that fuell injector cleaner in it but didnt help.

Ok, honestly, you don't need premium. You might notice a slight gain in mileage, but you won't notice HP increase at all. Unless an engine is tuned to accept 91 octane, you're wasting that extra 4 octane, and the extra 20 cents per gallon to get it. I don't know if the GTS requires premium, but the GT is only 87 (regular), so stick with that.

yah, you have a GT and it only needs 87octane. (i used to put 91 and it didnt hurt my engine) thumbsup

you should try cleaning the MAF sensor, throttle body, and use some of that gas tank cleaner.

its normal for it to idle less taht 1000rpm, but its not normal that your car would stall during idling thumbsup

This was performed on a GTS but doing it on a GT is a similar process since the TB looks almost identical and the IACV mounts the same.

You'll want to clean your mass airflow sensor (MAF)

also your Idle air control Valve (IACV)

I have an '00 GTS and when they replaced my clutch (after 8 days of having the car - bought it certified used) the mechanic said to make sure to put at least 91 octane in it from a good gas station (like Mobil, no off brand stations) or else you'll be replacing your fuel injectors and spark plugs. I figure better to trust him as a Toyota Dealership Mechanic (it's not like he's in sales).
