After relentlessly trying to figure out what the hell was making the loud noise in the front of the hood (sounds like a gear noise), an answer has been found... manifold connection to engine.

I've had the heat shield tightly re-bolted down, transmission replaced (luckly under warranty) and every missing screw, plastic bolt etc replaced and tightened and the noise is still fucking there! The dealership's "best guess" is the manifold. They say it would be $180 for labor (at least) and $500-$600 for the part. They also say don't worry about it, and that they've researched and contacted some toyota company reginal represenatives (engineers) and they say it is a common noise and "not to worry about it." I'm thinking they like they are throwing in the towel.

Any suggestions? Manifold replacement need to be done? Do it myself? Have any of you had any probs with this? I'm definitely pissed, I bought my 2000 gts 2 months ago (only 40k miles) and now finding all this shit out! Hey... at least I got a free trans!

have you checked your fan shroud????? maybe something is rattling against it???...when my fans kick on my hood rattles a bit...not like gears...but a little rattle nonetheless...also...have you had your accessory pumps checked...maybe its a faulty water or power steering pump...when either of those go bad it sounds like gears...or maybe for some reason you have a froggy axle...like where it connects to the tranny differential...I don't understand how a manifold would make a gearing noise...as far as I know the only noise it would make would be a hissing leaking noise...if anything were really wrong with the manifold it would be hard to drive the car...how does it drive????? and by that I mean how does the engine feel when you rev it??? and have you always had this problem with the car, or is it a recent development???...give more info and we'll help you pick it out...I'm putting cash on one of the accessory pumps though

Thanks for the reply Azz... I haven't not checked my fan shroud, but I don't think that is the problem. My car is at the dealership right now and they been going though it and can't find what is making the noise. I will ask them about one of the accessory pumps. I am new to the celica and with cars in general. Are any of those pumps accessible for me to examine with some help?

I bought the car in early november and the noise as been there since. I have heard the engine without the noise several time and it sounds perfect. The car drives great and the engine sounds great when I rev it. In fact when the car is not in gear and I rev the engine, there is no strange noise at all. It is only when I am driving and is most noticible when I am in 3rd gear between 2,500-3,000 rpms. I don't hear the noise while accelerating, just when I take the my foot off the gas. As soon as I put the clutch in (even just slighty) or when I hit the gas, the noise stops. I have a new trans and clutch so I know thats not the prob.

The dealership tells me not to worry about it and that they've researched it and heard that it is a common noise, but I don't want any noise period! It seems like these assholes just give up and when I come to them with suggestions (from these forums) to what the problem may be, they seem insulted by it and this is from two different dealerships. I need to find a mechanic that is willing to put forth the work until the problem is gone.

you have shitty bearings in your tranny synchronizers...some of us here on the boards with 2003 - 2004 models have had problems similar to this with bad transmission bearings...my dealer was going to give me a new transmission too, but I only had 25,000 miles on my car, and they decided to rip it apart and overhaul it under warranty instead...they found no real wear, just faulty bearings from the factory...some of the other boys here will probably chime in too...if its making a gearing noise its not the DAMN manifold!!! does it sound like its in reverse all of the sudden????...post more detail and I'l try to help from there

I had my synchronizers, 2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th gears and inner-outer bearings on the differental all replaced, due to this noise. Toyota even had the clutch, release fork, bearing and pressure plate replaced too. I still have this noise during the same 3rd gear around the same RPM's, but the other gears it's very slight. My mechanic stated that it's the position the 3rd gear sits in and while spinning at that RPM will make the noise. When my RPM's are higher at like 4000 it's not there. My mechanic said that there is really no way to explain it in words that's just how it's designed. He also drove my car and told me, "what are you worried about, your car shifts fine and every gear has power, your car is fine Nate don't worry, you worry to much". He also told me "You bought a performance car not a luxury car" "if you expect this engine and tranny to be quiet get a luxury car". I don't know if you ever heard rally car gears, but they sure chirp and wine like crazy, like they're going to fall apart, but keep pulling strong all the way through the race. I went through the same thing as you bro, seven times my car was at Toyota and all in all I basically got a new tranny and clutch. For my bearings in the differential, they needed to be changed anyway from driving to fast all the time on the freeway...well maybe they were just defective too.
Still today, two years later my car still makes the noise, but still drives and shifts like a champ. The noise isn't getting any louder then it was before. You can't notice the noise if you have an exhaust...lol

Thanks for all the responses... It is difficult to explain any further the noise that I am hearing. I got her back tonight from the dealership and they said (along with other dealership) that they called some tech support in Cali and said that the noise is just something being made. They also said to investigate further would cost mucho dinero. At both dealerships I delt directly with the master technician and foreman (who has a celica) and they both said that the noise being made wouldn't cause any problems and not to worry about.

The care drives great, no loss of power and it handles wonderfully. I guess I'm just going to play this by ear and stop spending money on people checking this shit out... I'd rather make it faster and put a system in it.

Cheers

looks like i'm getting the same problem with my 2000GTS..it rattle at 3k rpms in 1st, 2nd, 3rd sometime..if i shift at 4k rpm then there's no noise, but if i shift at 3.5k there are rattles sound from 3k-3.5k..and it also squeak like a lil bitches..the dealer said it's the Clutch Release Fork Pivot that gotten dry out so it's making the rattling and squeaking..they said it's ok to drive, not uncommon..then i bought the car to a Transmission shop and they said it could be the Bearing that's doing it..either way it's gonna cost me atleast 1grand to have it fix..so i guess i need to save up so next summer i can have it fix...but since yesterday the rattle at 3k rpm seem to go away just a lil bit..still noticable but just lil betta, not too loud..
