so what do you guys think? i got my b&m shortshifter cut even shorter recently..it came out just a little too short i think but i still like it a lot better than just the regular b&m.

i only cut the rod, not the throw portion. the throw portion was already decreased enough over stock..i just wanted the rod to be shortened because i still thought the b&m sat too high.

opinions, yay or nay.

and i obviously need a new boot...working on that. haha the stock boot looks horrible being all stuffed up like that. any suggestions on what would be a better boot or tips to make the stock boot fit better would also appreciated thumbsup

jeff (cycocelica) -- it grabs just fine. thumbsup even with the brake down there isn't a prob with my thumb getting in the way..but i don't really grab it straight on either. i grab it from the side (thumb on top).

celicatrdgts -- it feels pretty good. but i havn't driven with it yet. as a lot of you already know i blew my engine while back...and the new engine doesn't get installed until next week sometime. so i'll know more about it at that time obviously...but sitting still the shifting seems to work just fine...reverse is kinda a hoe to get to right now but the shifter is still pretty stiff from working on it (every time you work with the shifter--even the stock one--it gets stiff and you have to work it back in...takes about a week or two or driving usually).

caleb, let me the be the first to tell you that things short as hell spineyes

dude, i mean thats not even reaching the middle of the ashtray, thats a little toooooo shooort unlike the words. i mean its really gonna be easy to grind gears now i think and hit the gates. so you thought b&m wasnt short enough? shit man, wuts next, the shifter below the booth? jk

congrats for ur engine, and good luck with it. just be cautious driving with that short of a shifter. plus you need some mods to make that thing look better.

it's about an inch shorter than what i would have liked.

the total rod length is about 3-4 inches. the problem with that sparco knob is that it's pretty hollow--meaning that the top of the rod is actually only about 1/2" below the black sparco symbol...the knob kinda eats up most of the rod and i didn't take that into account which is why it came out shorter than i wanted.

i'm thinking about getting another knob to fix that though...like a 'straight knob' such as trd...that way it'll 'push' the rod out another 1 or 2 inches to get it to where i want it to be thumbsup

with the new knob..it should be only about an inch or so lower than twm, which is what i was going for to begin with.

well i got a few things in the works...i've been having that i-designs widebody kit on order since february (finally should get it at the end of this month)..so that'll help the exterior a whole lot thumbsup

and i HAD the trd ext. exhaust on order but i had to cancel due to the blown engine..which kinda sux but i am glad that my engine didn't blow when it was too late to back out...saved me from having to scrounge up another $400.

i also should be getting a cd player this christmas..so we'll see how it goes.

anyway, this is what i was talking about when the 'knob eats up the rod'. the rod actually ends where the red line crosses..just about 1/2" below the top of the knob. it's just the knob is practially all the way hollow so it makes it look shorter than it actually is. but anyway i'm looking for other knobs now to bring it up a little higher..just like an inch or two...no more than 2" though.

any suggestions would be appreciated for the new knob...and i still need to do something about that boot so feel free to add your $0.02 as well thumbsup

haha yea this one little rod that holds this plastic peice over the ball was a bitch to get out, took us like 45mins just to get that piece out alone. we tried everything, he took like 3 different hammers to it and used all kinds of tools to bang it out but the thing wouldnt budge. finally got it out though thumbsup

^^ which is why i wanted to cut the b&m rather than buying a twm.

it did come out a little too short...i think it'd look better with a longer knob that doesn 'eat' the rod up so much though. we'll see..it's definately not in my immediate plans, but i'll have to address it at sometime

^^ lol kevin..well unless you got a better way to take the backpin off your gonna have to use a hammer spineyes

it's not like your banging on the shifter itself..but theres a pin that you need to hammer out (yes--it's in the instructions) and its TIGHT to say the least. it's not like you can push it out..even with a hammer it was pretty hard to move the pin through...and vice versa when your putting it back in.

you have to use a tap and place it on the pin..then hammer the tap..you don't bang the shifter thumbsup (although i can't honestly say that i didn't miss the tap a few times) spineyes

^^ it's not bad to shift at all ..just when trying to get it into reverse. it also isnt broken in yet either..so i'll have to see if it's any easier to get into reverse or not once it loosens up.

I've been reading this since day one.
I also had to use a hammer like device for my SS. I was too lazy to go in my basement to get a hammer so I made the next logical step. Bang a heavy socket wrench on that member until it went in. What's the problem there? Hammer it in till it goes till full penetration. Am I missing something?
Anyways, that modified, shortened, cut down, shot peened and pruned weeping willow, is way too short - put simple. You obviously made a huge mistake and not HUGE because it's only a shifter that you can replace cheap.
I commend you for attempting a better shorter shifter than the previous person who made a muck out of things.
Good luck and scrap that one and try again.
