ok heres the story, yesteday i was stuck in heavy traffic i am at a complete stop and was listening to cd when suddenly my speakers started sounding like a blew them(staticy sound) so i was like fudge i blew my speakers so i just turned them off but then when traffic started to move i gave it gas and my car would not move at all it started creeping and it seems like there was no power. i quickly glance at my voltage meter and saw that the needle was blow 10(which is redline) i just kept on going the car started moving and the volt needle will jump to 13 but as soon as i slow down and idle it will drop to about 11(beginning of redline) i tested my lights and windows and when i use them the needle goes down a bit my digital gauge would dim and so are my lights. i park the car for about 8 hrs and strted driving again it feels like the car has little power and the volt is at 14 when i give it gas but once iam idle it settles at 12(on my way home it never went down rdline) so i dunno what the problem is my battery is less than 2yrs old and the alterbnator was still working, well at least it seems to be working fine and spinning. a friend told me alternators have lifetime warranties but since i have an aem pully doesnt that void it??? help me out guys i dont know whats wrong currently my car will be park until i figure it out thanks in advance

you got stock battery? To me it sounds like your batteries cells may have died or your battery is on it's last limb.

once you got the car started it dont use that much battery.. its your alternator that need to replace.. if the alt. is bad it will drain your battery while driving..

replace the battery bro. That stock battery is garbage anyway. Might as well pick up an OPtima.

BTW I when my stock battery was going to die it was starting up very slow and barely kicking over. Right away I knew what it was because I had the same problem with my other car which is camry and it had stock battery in it. Damn junk!

When I was having power problems and didn't know the cause, Symes Toyota in Pasadena said they would do a battery load test for free. They just roll the machine over and it takes 15 seconds once everything is hooked up. You should talk to your local dealership and see what they can do for you. Like everyone said the stock battery is junk and might last only 2 yrs, but likely to go out after 3 yrs, and that's what a service manager said. "The battery was chosen so that it doesn't last any longer than your 3 yr/36000 mile warranty." He was honest.

i think its your alternator... battery is not used when the car is on... True, since he does have a system it can cut the alternator's lifespan in half.

he needs to have the battery or the alternator tested or both b/c:
it still could be the battery. the battery is used under high electrical load conditions like with with your stereo on and blasting and maybe other stuff going. Plus if you're at idle for an extended period during rush hour, and the dying battery is not helping with the high load, you're going to have power problems, maybe indicated by a car that is about to stall or does stall. My car did stall under these conditions: bad battery, stereo on and a/c on, and at idle stuck in traffic. I replaced the battery and have had no problems since.
is the aem pulley underdriven? does it come with a belt?
From a mustang webpage on pullies:
Commonly Expressed Concerns about Underdrive Pulleys:
1. Lowering the alternator speed will cause the battery to run down. That may be true for some people. If your driving style includes idling the car for long periods, or if you have a high end audio system that requires constant power from the alternator, underdrive pulleys may not be for you. The hot idle speed for a 2000 Mustang 3.8L V6 engine is 700-800 RPM. ASP claims that with its 25% underdrive set the alternator will provide a full charge when the engine is turning over at 850 RPM. I don't expect any problems in this area. -----
so it might be a bad battery + the alternator underdrive pulley + stereo + idle,
OR it might just be underdrive alternator pulley + idle + stereo.

Thats very strange. My battery didnt go untill the car was almost 5 years old. Definately under warranty, Id take to a toyota dealer and they can do a charge test to see if you alternator is bad. that sucks man. good luck

5 years on a stock battery, I doubt it. I'd say it's time to change batteries, the car is still too young to have alternator problems but it's a likely possiblity. But might as well change the battery first man, cause that's cheaper than repairing or replacing an alternator.
Plus, I run my sound system off my stock battery and my car is a 2003 like your's. My battery isn't in the best shape either so I would say it's your battery.

sounds like alternator
you can remove your battery once the engine is running and the car will still function just fine by running off the alternator.

I dunno if it is the battery and who said he has a system that shit is stock. Oh and Marco batteries, any batteries (not sure about high performance like optima), are usually good for only 3 years. Plan of attack: go to Autozone and get a batteryfrom them and then constantly change it every 6 months (a lot of people do this so don't call me out on fraud).

I am going to say that the first thing that I would check is the battery because it is the easiest. Just get a volt ohm meter and hook it up to the battery posts. Put the meter on the volts scale and the reading should be 12.6 or very close to that!! Take your car to a parts store and ask if they can test your battery for you if you dont have this tool. Although you could go to WalMart or somewhere and get one they are not all that much money. My second questions is to you have the AEM power pulley or any underdrive pulleys???? If you do this is where your problem might be. Take it off and put the stock one back on. Although this problem to me sounds like a alternator but this is harder to test then your battery. If your alternator is not performing to it potential it will not power everything sufficently this dimming your lights causing the gauge to go wack and may other electrical problems. If your car is under warranty take it back to the dealer. If not on the weekend or something take your alternator out.(Directions on the install guides) Then take your alternator to the parts store and ask them to test it. Most all parts stores can do this. They will be able to tell you if the alternator is drawing to much from your system and causing the problems. If this is it then obviosly replace it. One last thing is disconnet the battery and make sure that the post on the battery are clean, and also check to make sure connections on the alternator are tight and good as well as your battery connnections. This should help you!!!!!

I see that you have the power pulley. This pulley will make a bad alternator function even worse. The point of the pulley is to take strain off the motor, but as a result of this you are going to lose electric power. Now I am going to say for sure that it is your alternator, but check all your connections and battery terminals. Take the alternator off and get it test at any local parts store!!!!

voltmeter monitors the power going through the system...
so when the car is on, its from the alternator and when its off it measures from the battery...
it IS your alternator, i'm 100000 percent sure...
the battery is only used for startup.

it could be the alternator, but the statement that the battery is only used for startup is false.

it could be the alternator, but the statement that the battery is only used for startup is false. True, it's also a buffer for the electrical system, when you put a heavy load on the car (Stereo, lights, heater, etc.) extra current is drawn from the battery. When the system draw is low, the alternator charges the battery to replenish the current drawn from it. while it's true you could run with no battery after startup, when a high load is placed on the electrical system of the vehicle without a good battery, there's a chance the car would die. But startup is what eventually kills a battery, because it has more current draw than any other part of the car when in use. Stock battery is definitely sucko; I just replaced mine last month; and I've only had the car for a little over a year; it was a 2002 car that sat at the lot for a year though, so I can see why it went so quick, going by what others have said, it's good for about 2-3 years in my opinion as well.

Battery life not only depends on what you have running in the car and how you drive, but largly on the environment in which you live in.
When you got your battery replaced, if you took it somewhere to have that done, they should have tested your alternator for you.
Just take your car up to Autozone and tell them you need your alternator tested. They will wheel a cart out to your car and have you idle the engine at a given RPM while they test the current generated by the alternator. They will tell you if it's good or not.
