My Mom and I were driving down to Nj last week and I spotted a deer struggling to get to the other side of the highway. This thing was a buck too. It was a couple hundred yards away from us when it tried to cut off a truck. The truck and deer both swerved and the deer kept on running until it ran past our car all the way behind us where it was hit by a Subaru. The deer flew up in the air and we saw the Subaru turn off to the breakdown lane to report the incident. It was a close call for us and the truck. Then when we got home we were trying to figure out why a deer just runs out into the highway like that.
We think the animal gets blinded by the headlights, but we don't know for sure.

I know animals do get caught in the headlights. Here in NM, we have Komikazi rabbits that run at your car instead of away or to the side. Something about two headlights that just puts them into somesort of daze or something.

lol Deer are clever cagey animals with an intuitive sense of danger thats why they run into the road when they see things that are 10 times their size and moving twice as fast.

Also if it's a new highway then the deer aren't used to cars and don't know what the heck to do.
