Toyota recalls 92,577 Celicas to fix daytime lights
Wednesday, December 1, 2004

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 92,577 Celica cars because their daytime running lights are too bright and could be a hazard to oncoming drivers, federal regulators said Wednesday.

The recall affects Celicas from the 2000 and 2001 model years. Dealers will repair the vehicles for free beginning in March, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

NHTSA also said General Motors Corp. will recall 1,378 of its new Chevrolet Cobalt coupes because a headlight bulb shield can loosen or break. Without the shield, the lights cause too much glare. Dealers will install new shields free.

NHTSA has gotten thousands of complaints about headlight glare in the last few years. In October, the agency said it has shut down 24 suppliers of kits that allow drivers to install their own high-intensity headlights.

when the dealer fixes the DRL are they just going to disable them or are they going to use a light or something that is no so bright?

I think this is a stupid recall. What they should do is recall the cheap lexan on the earlier models and replace the sunroof thumbsdown

Yeah, this is a goofy recall. Maybe the NHTSB (National Highway Trans. Safety Board) got on Toyota's case. Why only '00 and '01? Did they make them dimmer after that?

The DRL's are a safety hazard to other people. I don't believe people driving look at your sunroof crash into a barrier because of the peeling.

Mine are disabled and my fogs are reconfigured. Even if they weren't I wouldn't let my local dealership even check my tire pressure let alone put any tools on it. They suck thumbsdown

Let's recall that, but not the faulty peeling sunroofs or condensation build up in those very same headlight housings.

Toyota has terrible service. thumbsdown

no, they mixed up the engines and are gonna replace all of ours with 3sgte's with twin snails and AWD (we can only dream). i'd let my dealer do something like this because the salesman who sold me my car is 19 and he is a member of a street racing club (oddly, though, he drives a hatchback civic. he blasted his clutch by pushing too many horses.)

Out of all the things they can recall it had to be the DRLs what about the lift bolts and the belt tensioners!

I still don't see how this can realistically be called a safety hazard...

is there a law against driving around in the day time with your headlight low beams on all the time??? I always drive that way... but I guess I should now drive with just my DRL on since they are now saying it's brighter wtf

my are headlights on every time the car is driven so people will see the vehicle easier and are less likely to cut me off

Isaac, that's not a bad idea, and is actually better from the front view. Remember that the DRLs are actually our high beams. This means even though they are dimmer than headlights, they are angled upward- toward other drivers. Low beams are brighter, but are angled downward- where the DRLs should have been. It was a stupid design by Toyota.

The problem with having headlights on during the day is your tails. If people see tails during the day, they usually assume they are brake lights. I'd be more worried about someone getting confused and rear ending your car.

but when you have your headlights on and your tails are also on... then when you press your brake, your tail brake lights will get brighter - ALONG with your third brake light...

but i do see what you're talking about for the headlamp issues rice

Yeah, I know the 3rd light comes on and the other two get brighter. But when you get behind someone who drives with both feet and has their brake lights on, you're always nervous, because you don't know if they're really braking or not. Someone behind us in the day could assume we're one of those people and our third light is just burned out. I'm not saying it's likely... but in California, you always have to account for the 90% of the population who can't drive and doesn't have any common sense. rice rofl

The DRLs are basically your high beams on 40% power. I don't know, but maybe someone can help me out, is that computer controlled? If it is, maybe it could be a simple adjustment to 35% or something like that.
