Cutting carbon fiber help please.

I would like to cut this Carbon Fiber cover to show the catch can that will sit under it. Anybody know if you can cut a section out of this and make it look good again or is this a bad idea?

By the way Sultin, I love the looks of your engine. Where is a good place to get all the Carbon Fiber covers? How much did you pay?

not sure if you've ever worked with carbon before but it's very difficult to keep a clean edge after modification. This is the main reason I didn't buy the oil catch canister since I'd have to mod my IPT Carbon Fiber pieces or it wouldn't show - wink

If you feel adventurous and have experience with Carbon Fiber, then by all means try it and post the results... thumbsup

Thanks.
Hell no I'm not going to try it until one of the experts on here says it can be done. Even then, I'll have my shop do it.
I was thinking of sticking a small rubber trim around the edge after it is cut. Not sure how that would look though.

I had my plastic engine cover chromed, had a custom Intake manifold made and chromed, now it's about to come out of the shop with the turbo kit installed.
I think it would look good to finish it off with some Carbon Fiber covers now, but if everybody says "Don't cut Carbon Fiber", I'll just cut the plastic cover and paint it red again.
How do you think that would look?

qbanprepster21,
I don't think there is another place to mount it. All the pipes for the turbo are going on the other side, plus I have polished the entire surface of the engine and don't want to cover all that up with a big cover.
I would just take it off, but that side of the engine bay doesn't look good with all the wires and things on that side. I think a smaller cover over there would look best.

Thanks Virgilson,
I'll keep trying to find a way around that.

i dont know how that caronb fiber is as compared to the stuff i use. i cut my own carobn fiber fomr a large sheet to amek my heat sheld and rear licenseplate backing. for my suff as long as you had a sharp pair of scizors and cut small amoutns at a time it turend out well. also i used my girlfreinds nail file to smooth out the dges. i suggest to liek the top corner or osmehting just a small cut to see how it works. thats really the onyl way you will be able to do it. i dint have a problem with splintering as much as the clearcoat cracking on certain parts, i think they were cooked ot long. goodluck bor, if you need ot see my examples look int eh profile.

Those things are so expensive I do not know if I would do that. I was thinking about the same thing in the future since it wont fit over the s/c. If the edges dont get frayed too much you could do something like this but I dunno Linked Image

Thanks TimO, that is a good idea. Never thought of that.

Steve, that's also a good idea, but that's right where the BOV is going. Not sure if I could fit it there next to the BOV. What do you think? Thanks for the picture of c2gas' engine. I always wondered what his looked like.

Sultan, I was just about to ask the same thing. How in the heck did he do that Intake manifold?

Thanks JBing, couldn't I hold it together with some kind of glue and a small rubber trim?

Thanks ragingpaseo.

Thanks hombredelassrtass, also a good idea. I have seen your work. Remember? We had a long conversation about it? Wrapping the end caps on my wing.

Thank you SLVCELI, but I was talking about the side cover.

Thanks VoodooGTS, but that's where my pipes and BOV are going. Plus I have spent hundreds of hours polishing the serface of my engine and I really want to show that off by making the side cover smaller.
You have been into car shows a lot longer than I have, think the judges will appreciate a polished engine or will it not be worth any points unless it's an actuall mod?

ERic...I've got an idea...why don't you move your batery to the trunk and get the wiring extensions from summit racing or something...they have kits to relocate the battery, and you would have all that extra room for bling factor in your engine...Also, if you are doing all of this for shows, have you considered getting a clear Hood for shows???? I saw a celica at the Nopi nationals this last year, that had its engine done wild, and he had a clear Hood over it so everyone could see it, but the stuff in the air wouldn't get to it while it sat out all day

you can cut it... i would use a drill and one of those circular cutting attachments that go on.

... then just like you said... split some rubber tubing and put it around the edges... if you do it right it wont splinter... it would be just like installing a hoodpin...

off course, it will give you major points for having things polished. i mean look at ryans car, that guy is winning shows left and right. his engine bay is polished to the maxxx smile

Thanks Steve, I have already removed my battery from under the Hood and put 2 red top batteries in the trunk to handle the 7000 watt sound system. There will be one on each side of the 2 NX bottles, surounded by molded fiberglass.
The filter for the turbo will go in the place of the battery.
I have seen the Celica you mentioned. I thought about it, but desided I liked the BRS Hood better and went with that. Good idea though.

Thanks spaztikid, I will keep that in mind. Have you ever tried to cut Carbon Fiber before?

Thanks hombredelassrtas, kind of hard to read your post sometimes, but I know what you mean.

Thanks xcivickillerx, I will. No, I definitely don't want to mess this up. That shit is expensive.

Thanks VoodooGTS. Ryans car is one of the cars that made me want to start fixing up my Celica. If there is ever a top ten section on this site, I think he would be on top.
How is your show record? I bet it's pretty damn good too.
