me and my friend were arguing about this. I kno the 1zz has can take to a turbo better stock. But does it really have more potential, He thinks that if a gt and gts are boosted the same psi gt will still win. I told him you u change the stock internals on the gts it can beat the turbo gt. but he says gt has more potential period. Wut do you think?

There was a post recently about a 1zz MR2 putting down 385 horse power, and i don't remember seeing any 2zz w/ that much power

I think they're essentially the same, except for compression ratios. The GT has a bit more power low-end, but the GTS makes up for this by blasting the GT away in the top-end (lift).

So, if you reinforced both engines to the same degree and ran the same amount of boost, I would think that the GTS engine would still win.


And the reason for not seeing a GTS putting down 380+, is probably because more reinforcements are required in order to run that much pressure. But I think if a GT and a GTS are both running the same PSI under the same compression, the GTS would have the edge (due to lift), though this edge would become less and less pronounced the more power that's being put down... Eventually, the 40 HP boost from lift would be trivial, and they'd probably be about equal.


This is based on my knowledge of the two engines, and I definately don't know a lot about cars running turbo setups!
(Or a whole lot about cars, period tongue )

There is no way that a 1zz has more potential than a 2zz. Sure you can't boost a stock gts quite as much as you can boost a stock GT...but that's because the GTS has a higher compression ratio and is therefore already making more power. If you put low compression pistons in a GTS and then same compression ratio in a GT...and run the same amount of boost...they will be almost entirely identical in theory. But when you hit lift i would think in the GTS you might get a SLIGHT edge but wouldn't be as noticeable if you're making a lot of power already

and yeah i don't have a ton of turbo know how...i'm basing this all on logic..but i think it only makes sense.

the gt enigine was not made to be a high output engine. turbos loose their spoil at high rpms and thats when the gts takes off, no way would a turbo gt have the gts all the way. adding a turbo to either vehicle is risky. the compression on both cars is set up like most drag cars, and boosting onto that is pushing it. If they are boosted the same psi both on stock internals and stock compression, the gts will be faster due to the higher compression. However the gt can boost slightly more than the gts on stock compression due to the lower compression ratio. If you build both motors and put lower compression pistons in both they will be almost the same. The biggest difference would be weight and gear ratios.

Any 1zz or 2zz engine boosted to 380+ horsepower would have had so much done to it internally that it wouldn't be recognizable as either of the original engines.

i think stock turboed gt and stock turboed gts they would be too close to call, anyways if you dropped the comp. on a gts lift would be less effective

Id just put it that i dont think either engine has that much more potential than what it already does. Sure if you dump enough money into it you can make anything super quick but you can either buy a gt and have to turbo it along with the other standard mods or you can spend the extra on the gts and only have to buy intake/exhuast/flywheel/chip.
