Just curious how long everyone waited before changing their brakes. My car has around 24k on it right now, and the brakes are starting to make some noise when cold. I know that doesn't mean anything by itself, but I also notice some fade. Could their time already be up?

I have a 6spd gts and i downshift a lot to save brakes. I replaced my stock pads when they had about 50% meat left(65,000 miles) on them for Axxis Ultimates and never looked back.

How much did this run you? I usually shift to N and then use my brakes. The way I think about it is this, it is cheaper and easier for me to replace my pads.

What year GTS?

It depends on how much braking you do. Not knowing about the Celica brakes specifically, I can say that my wife's 4Runner, with about 28K miles, just had a brake inspection, and they should last another 50K easy. Toyota puts some good pads on their brakes, as far as I can tell. The Saturn I had before the Celica went 120K miles before needing brakes (one of the Saturn's better features). If you're easy on it, I bet the Celica can do that too - its a lightweight car like the Saturn.

I'd definitely get them inspected, or check them yourself though. There could always be the odd defect.

BTW... I guess from this thread, I've realized my brakes must be fine at 24k.

I'm guessing with brakes, age is a better indicator than mileage, since someone who mostly drives around town and accumlates 40K miles over 4 years has probably used their brakes more than someone who accumulates 40K miles in just a year or two.

^^^i dont think so, either that, or you misphrased your statement.

a person who gains 40k in a year or two stopped more frequently than a car that gained 40k in a span of 4 years. if equally divided you can say that about 10k was gained in each of the four years.

$120 for front and rear pads, I did the installation myself. No, I did not turn/resurface my rotors. I have a 2001

O yeah, how about the reverse problem. How the break makes that high pitching noise only when braking while on reverse. What is needed to be changed then

My point was in comparing stop-and-go driving with longer duration trips.

Car A: 4 years of stop-and-go driving = 40K mi
Car B: 2 years of highway driving = 40K mi

They both have the same mileage, but I expect Car A will have more wear on the brake pads.

brake pads really depend of the way you drive. my friends brakes lasted for 12k miles on his rsx, but he used brake hard a few times to reduce speed from 100+ to lower speeds.
i use braking and downshifting, i dont like to downshift with the engine screaming though. think about it, pads cost you cheap and easy to replace, downshifting will cost you gas, engine wear, and maybe pressure on the clutch.
my car has 16,000 miles on it and its ok as of now. i think they will last til 30,000 miles max.
as for squeaking, when you driving and hear a squealing noise from ur tires (high pitch), that means its time to change the brake pads. im saying when you driving not when you braking. dont drive with ur brakes worn out cz its gonna end up costing you new rotors. avoid sudden and hard braking cz you might bend the rotor from the heat.

Mine are still OK (little bit of noise in the morning, when it's near-freezing outside, but even then it's rare).

Of course, I only have around 11,700 miles, so... tongue

And I usually shift into N and use the brakes to stop only when it's cold (because if I downshift, the car still charges ahead due to the 2,000 RPM cold-idle grin ).
