What dose the Celica's ECU remember and for how long?

Hypothetical example:

If I go to the dealer with a transmission problem, can the dealer read the ECU's memory and find out that several months ago I shifted past redline, and then say that I abused the car and refuse to fix the problem under warranty?

That's what I thought too, but many months ago I read something on this site to the effect of the ECU had a permanent memory, not sure if it's true or not and I can't find the post.

when I had a problem the service manager at my local dealer said that pulling the ECU fuse would reset all the codes. Then once the CEL came on to come in and it would only read the codes since the reset. So I'm gonna say NO, it doesn't have a "forever memory". thumbsup

It recets when you turn the car off if it cannot compensate for a change in a perameter. You can unplug the battery and leave it sit for 15min insted of pulling the fuse. This will cause a reset. Cant do shit about it, unless you go aftermarket with the ecu

I've heard (on this site) that every CEL is permanently stored in the ECU, and cannot be reset. Resetting the ECU will erase the tuning maps your car has made, but not the CELs.

Conceivably if you had enough CELs some of the earlier ones might get deleted, or the new ones would not be stored, but I'm sure that would take a lot of CELs.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Every ECU has to at least comply with the OBDII standards and EPA laws. This means it has to keep MIL's (or CEL's) between 40 and 80 warm up periods following the shut-off of the CEL, depending upon the cause of the CEL. You can manually erase any of the trouble codes in its memory with a diagnostics scanner or by disconnecting the battery. I suppose it's possible that a manufacturer could make an ECU that permanantly stores data, but I don't see why if they don't have to by law. smile
