I was wondering if someone where to drop a 2zz-ge engine into an MR2 spyder how close could it be to the Lotus Espirit (I think that's the one i'm thinking of) i read somewhere that it has the same engine as the GTS but i guess slightly altered to make 190hp. what do you guys think?

Lotus Esprit = V8

it's not even close...it's like saying the gts and corolla xrs (2zz) are close...same engine but not even in the same class.

car and driver (who can't drive a 2ZZ worth for shit) can take the lotus elise at 13.3 @ 1/4 mile. i believe the fastest they have taken the 2ZZ mr-s stock is 14...search in spyder chat.

IMO we're splitting hairs here. In essence both the elise and the 2ZZ MR2 are lightweight, 2dr, mid-engine, rwd high output 4bangers. Sure the elise is lighter...but you take all their lightweight high tech materials and replaced them on the MR2, and put intake and exhaust on the MR2...they would be almost identical.

with enough money you can do anything. i am saying that just a 2ZZ conversion mr-2 is not comparible to a lotus elise.

take into account the wheel base of the lotus and the mrS also the suspensions set ups for both stock are very very different.

car and driver tested the elise at 1.08 g's not .98. I have the mag at home.

a 2zz powered spider is how the mr2 should have been offered to begin with, I'd have one if it was a factory option.

the cars lightweight, mid engine rwd perfect for drag racing.

the elise's engine management allows for 8600rpms limiter in 1st gear allowing the driver celica pfc powered cars acceleration only 10X faster because its 700lbs lighter, lotus lists its curb weights wet in otherwords with full tank of gas and fluids, gts is listed at 2500 dry, gas and fluids adds anotehr 100lbs or so.

that's interesting. car and driver's speed issue had a shoot out with an elise and a gts viper and it rated the viper at around 1.03 while it had the elise at .98...i wonder why there was such a discepancy... confused

Whoa whoa whoa... unless I misread, Car and Driver actually tested a 2zz MR2 somehow?! confused

Anyway, it would be one sick car... but not even in the same class as the Elise. The Elise is nearly in supercar territory. If the mags run it at 13.3 seconds, I'm going to say it would pull 12.9 or better when pushed by a good driver. Think about that one for a second. Not to mention Car and Driver said it made the S2k's handling seem pedestrian.
